Starting off with 56 cities from around the world, last week you voted for the top 32 leaving 24 cities behind. While some places like Prague, Vienna, and Los Angeles barely missed out it’s now time to vote for your favorites in 16 city vs. city match ups. The cities were roughly seeded based on the number of votes and there are some interesting contests between Washington DC vs. Stockholm, London vs. Chicago, and Dublin vs. Barcelona. Vote for your favorites between now and this Friday, March 5th 12pm US EST.

Enjoyed voting and loved seeing how my vote fitted in with the rest of the votes. On most of the votes- I was right with the majority- but was not surprised to realize there were a few where I fell away from the pack.

Thanks for putting this on- it has been fun- and looks like it will just get better :) - love your chart!!

    • Anil P. says:

Some of the early voting has surprised me but lots of close contests. Should make for an intriguing sweet 16 :)

I’m glad you’re enjoying the contest, I like the fun it brings to the site. Good luck!

  2. So much fun Anil!

And remember – if NYC wins, I’ll donate the money to http://bigapplegreeter.org – a volunteer organization that welcomes visitors to NYC!

  3. David says:

Thanks for giving me an easy one for the first round Anil. Zermatt? Come on? This is gonna be a walk in the park.

  4. Mark H says:

Geez, some of the votes are close. Some of the pairings are vcery difficult comparing completely different cities – natural beauty, history, culture. Fascinating idea with the format that is used like a sports tournament.

    • Anil P. says:

Last year I arranged the cities based on region but decided to see what interesting match ups would come of a vote-based seeding.

  5. Super fun, Anil. And great work with the easy voting interface. Love it. Wish my nomination, Bogota, would have made it father. Someday. Someday…

  6. T-roy says:

This is fun and different, was great voting and look forward to seeing the end results.

Was surprised though not one South American country (or Central American country at that) made this list. Funny how the votes add up as well. Take Boston (18 votes) who was in the Top 5 on the original list and Athens was at the bottom (4 votes). Now it’s almost like a 180 turn-around and Boston is losing to Athens at the time I had written this. You can tell there are a lot more different voters per week because so.

Anyone else got any thoughts on this?

    • Anil P. says:

It is surprising. I think the voters do change and perhaps people in the contest send it around more now that the competition is head to head. I think the long preliminary list doesn’t give people the urgency to vote, but I’m just guessing.

  7. Mary R says:

very fun idea, and I love how you utilize the technology.

It occurred to me as I was voting that it may be interesting to break down the results according to participant’s home country. I found myself as an American voting for more exotic places like Tokyo over Sydney or Montreal. In my mind, I always put more familiar places close to home last on my travel list since I figure I can visit them more easily than more remote places.

    • Anil P. says:

Interesting thought. It wonder what motivates people when they vote – some vote for the people they know and others for personal favorite destinations. In the other cases I’m not sure what the deciding factor is…but interesting theory you bring up.

  8. Alas, my dear Chicago probably won’t make it past this round, being put up against London.

  9. JoAnna says:

Seriously can’t believe you stacked Stockholm against Washington D.C. I love them both but had to go with my city!

  10. Aly says:

Voted! I think I might have tipped the balance on atleast on group! That was fun, can’t wait to see what city ends up on top.

  11. Dave Fox says:

Eek! My favorite city in the world, Ho Chi Minh City, is neck and neck with Berlin right now!

This was a brilliantly fun idea, Anil! Thanks!

    • Anil P. says:

Thanks Dave, glad you’re enjoying the contest. Those two cities have been back and forth all week, wonder what happens in these final 2 hours :)

  12. I’m sorry Anil, am I being thick but I’m clicking all over this page and can’t work out how to vote.
