In reply to Brian Smith. Especially if you're driving at night or when the roads are light of traffic a good cell conversation can keep you mentally engaged. I like the idea of talking to the radio as well, good way to keep your mind conscious and from going into auto-pilot.

In addition to “being silly” and singing at the top of my lungs, I find if I keep my brain occupied, I am more able to stay alert. Rather than listening to music, I’ll listen to talk radio or books on tape. I purposely engage myself in what I’m listening to so that my brain is constantly going – even having mental arguments with the author or commentator. Also, I make sure that there’s someone that knows I’m driving (in another time zone if I’m driving through the night) so that I can call them and talk with them when I am getting really tired. Anything to keep your brain occupied will get you over the hump.
