The demonstration was peaceful but escalated quickly into a standoff with police who tried to disperse the crowds with tear gas and rubber bullets.

The scenes look quite violent (not to mention the police tactics). Was this a peaceful demo gone wrong, or a flat-out riot march? I wonder about the percentage of demonstration instigators versus peaceful ones or “turncoat” undercover police? It seems likely the cops prefer to escalate demo’s into riots—is this accurate?
