A very comprehensive summing up of Vietnam for first time visitors. Please note that not all visitors have the US dollar as their currency. The Vietnamese are willing to accept all currencies. The US dollar generally tends to get rounded down by a significant amount outside of banks/official exchange bureaux. On transportation-train comfort can be booked in advance-hard seat to bunks depending on your budget and routing/duration of journey. You mention all forms of transport being packed to defy gravity. Are you talking about local buses/intercity minibuses? You pay for the comfort and safety you want/can afford.Although driving is dangerous in VN can you say how many foreigners have been killed/injured in VN on a yearly basis. Most manage to do it to themselves.Living out of a backpack could be ok for some-plenty of locals offer washing services.Don't forget the airlines rules on what can be carried in the cabin. Why not buy a backpack in VN,leave your suitcase with your hotel and travel around, returning to your hotel to select other clothes. Most people would end up buying clothes locally and then throwing them away before returning home. All in all your comments are helpful.

Great article, Claudia! The first 2 photos make me dream about how that place look like at sunset or during the night. I think the light is great. Great for pictures or for meditation. Great for being one with the universe
