You summoned up everything very nicely here, Anil. Thank you :) As you say, there isn't "one rule fits all," so it's hard to generalise. Taking one's own food is an obvious alternative, but not always possible or practical. I have come to understand about myself that I am, really, not vegan in the strictest sense. I will eat honey, eggs or cheese if they are produced by small, local producers. What I avoid are mass-produced foods, so eating airline food at all really isn't an option. At home, with the number of local producers growing all the time, I limit my consumption to control cholesterol, which isn't the same as being vegan, I know. Really, what you are saying is to think about what we eat, and that's something we should consider every day, not just when travelling.

BTW I love your airport wifi app.....how about an airport food guide app??? I love Pret a Manger too for instance, knowing what's available at major airports would be great!

Thanks Ryan. I can't believe I still haven't been to Thailand yet :) I thought about saving it for last (after all the other countries) but in the last few days so many people have written me about how good the food is there I'm not sure I'll wait too much longer.

Hi Anil,

Nice write up.

My wife is a vegetarian, former vegan. She does ample legwork pre-flight and pre-trip to ensure veggie fare is available.

We love Thailand because going vegan is easy there. I stop eating meat and usually dairy too for months, enjoying meals at Thai Buddhist vegetarian restaurants around the country. Turkey was awesome too, for vegan types.

Western lands are often more difficult for vegans; good point. Here in the US, vegan restaurants are hard to find outside of urban centers like NYC. Vegan fare is often expensive because it is a specialty food in such a meat-centric country.

I eat a little meat here in NJ but go vegetarian most of the time. But when we return to Thailand, it'll be all vegan, all the time.
