Costa Rica’s capital city is the main entry point into a diverse number of stops across the country but few stay and see San Jose. Aside from having a bad safety reputation, it’s not the green, coastal place many tourists come to Costa Rica to see. San Jose is a city that will surprise many visitors though with safe spaces, historic foods, and a vibrant atmosphere not to be missed.

Watch the video here to see what San Jose has to offer tourists.

Use Your Guides

A good guide will help you get around to understand the best neighborhoods in San Jose. There are several where you’ll experience a high degree of security, while others should be visited mainly during the day. This goes for downtown; it’s where you’ll find the Mercado Central, Teatro Nacional, and Mercado Borbon. Only open during the day, be mindful of your belongings in the surrounding streets and don’t draw attention to yourself.

It’s in the two major markets here though that you’ll find some of the best and oldest San Jose foods from Soda Tala to must-visit ice cream shop, La Sorbetera de Lolo Mora.

There’s also Bario Escalante, a hipster and lively part of San Jose that has a reputation for food, nightlife, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Ride Share Around

Ride share apps and Uber are commonly used in San Jose and make it easy to get around without having to worry about negotiating a fare price. They also make tracking and sharing your movements with friends and relatives possible so you have have more safety as you travel the in San Jose. A good guide will set you up with an introduction into San Jose for a good first day but then you have the next to explore on your own.

Not spending at least a day in San Jose is missing a lot on Costa Rican culture that emanates to the rest of the country from here.

Here’s a little secret. The best horse racing events in the world aren’t really about which animal finishes first.

Yes, the race itself is what generates hundreds of billions of dollars worldwide. It’s why people gather, but what most in the audience are really looking for is an experience.

Many people are very surprised to learn that events like the Kentucky Derby, or for that matter, any race, last for less than 120 seconds. Is that really what draws hundreds of thousands of people to Louisville every year? Of course not.

Fans in the stands want to be part of something. The cultural experience, the luxury accommodations, the excitement. Those are the things on offer at the most spectacular horse racing destinations in the world.

Let’s take a look at venues that are genuinely worth your time and attention.

Overview

What is our criteria? There are literally thousands of racetracks all over the world. What makes a venue worthy of inclusion on a limited list like the one you’re reading right now?

While it’s debatable what details account for the very best horse racing venues, we decided to focus on a combination of the type of experience the location delivers, as well as its pedigree and history.

If you look at websites like this one, you’ll find races happening all over the world: https://www.twinspires.com/200-signup/

Most of them are worth your time and attention if you’re a fan of the sport, but at the same time, it would be impossible, or at least not practical, to visit every track.

What we’ve got for you today is nothing short of the best of the best. Let’s take a look.

Churchill Downs

Obviously, it would have been absurd to make a list of the best horse racing venues in the world and not include the home of the Kentucky Derby.

Churchill Downs was founded in the 19th century and began hosting prestigious events almost immediately. The Derby itself is the biggest draw. In fact, it’s the most-watched horse racing event in the world, attracting a global audience of approximately 20 million people.

Every year, more than 150,000 people head to Louisville to watch the event in person. If you have a big budget and a healthy patience for chaos, that could be a good option for you.

On the other hand, if you’re okay with skipping all the fanfare, you can still visit and even tour this historic location nearly all year round. Churchill Downs holds races throughout the summer, all of which are more affordable and accessible than the Derby.

It’s a great way to visit the most famous location in horse racing without spending so much money that you might have to postpone your eventual retirement.

Royal Ascot

Churchill Downs is indeed the most famous track in the world, but fans of racing often consider Royal Ascot the very pinnacle of the sport, at least over in Europe.

The event has been held for more than 300 years and to this day serves as a centerpiece of the English social season. It’s held in June at Ascot Racecourse and takes place over five days of festivity.

Like Churchill Downs, Ascot Racecourse is open all year round. However, if you have the chance to go during Royal Ascot, you certainly should.

Not only is it the pinnacle of English high society’s summer social calendar, but it is also just a genuinely unique racing experience. Each day of the event begins with a royal procession. If you’re interested in seeing literal monarchs on parade in full finery, this is your chance.

Flemington

Flemington Racetrack is home to the Melbourne Cup. The Melbourne Cup is known, both in Australia and abroad, as the race that stops a nation.

Millions of Australians tune in every year, to the point that widespread productivity sometimes ceases.

Though this event does not quite have the history of the last two we’ve described, it has been around for more than 150 years and continues to serve as one of the most important races in the world.

Honorable Mention

We’d need a lot more space to fully do the topic of prestigious racetracks justice. The three featured above are, beyond serious dispute, the most famous in the world. However, there are many more worth your time and attention.

Some are growing in fame, for example, Dubai. Others are simply enjoyable destinations in their own right. If you want an extremely pleasant family outing oriented, at least partially, around horse racing, you’ll have a good experience in places like the Finger Lakes, where natural beauty and high levels of activity combine for a pleasant vacation experience.

There are lots of great tracks out there, all of which are worth taking a trip to.

Traveling the world is one of life’s most rewarding experiences. It broadens your perspective and creates lasting memories. The problem is that travel can also be expensive. Many people put off trips because they think the cost is too high. The good news is that you can learn how to travel smart and save money along the way. With careful planning and a few insider tips, it is possible to see amazing places without overpaying.

Planning Your Trip on a Budget

When planning travel on a budget, the first step is setting a clear spending limit. Decide how much you are willing to spend on flights, hotels, food, and activities. Break your total travel budget into categories and assign a number to each one. This keeps you focused and helps you avoid overspending in one area at the expense of another.

Comparing prices is also essential. Before you book anything, spend time looking at different options for transportation and lodging. Prices can vary widely between dates and providers. Taking the time to shop around helps you find the best deals. You may be surprised at how much you can save with a bit of research.

Using simple cost-saving strategies while planning also helps you stay on track. For some people, a savings method like the envelope challenge can be useful. The envelope challenge encourages you to save specific amounts of money over time and put the cash into envelopes labeled for different spending goals. Over time, you build a travel fund without feeling the pinch of saving large sums at once. It is an easy way to prepare your travel budget without stress.

Finding Affordable Flights

Flight costs are often the biggest travel expense. Booking early is one of the most reliable ways to find lower fares. Airlines and carriers usually release tickets months in advance. If you have specific travel dates, booking as soon as possible gives you the best chance of getting a good deal. Waiting until the last minute usually means paying more.

Flexibility matters a great deal, too. Traveling on weekdays or outside of peak travel seasons will often mean paying less for airfare. Many people do not realize that shifting a trip by just a day or two can result in significant savings. Even flight times can affect price. Be open to early morning or late night flights if that means spending less.

Alternative airports are another way to cut costs. If you are flying to a popular destination, look at flights into nearby airports. Landing slightly farther from your final destination and then taking a train or local bus might cost less overall. Many travelers find that a short ground trip is worth the savings when airfare is reduced.

Saving on Accommodation

Your choice of accommodation has a big impact on your travel budget. Hotels near city centers and popular attractions tend to be expensive. Consider staying in neighborhoods just outside busy areas. Lodgings there are often cheaper and allow you to experience local life more genuinely.

Consider options that are designed for budget travel. Vacation rentals and shared spaces can cost much less than traditional hotels. Some options include kitchens, which allow you to prepare meals and reduce the amount you spend eating out. Eating even a few times during your trip can save a noticeable amount of money.

Another strategy is staying in simpler lodging for part of your trip while splurging on special nights. For example, you could book budget rooms for most of your stay and enjoy a nicer place for just two nights. This lets you balance comfort with cost without overspending.

Cutting Costs on Food and Dining

Food and dining costs can quickly eat away at your travel budget. Eating like a local rather than sticking to tourist restaurants can reduce this cost significantly. Local eateries usually offer authentic meals at lower prices. Street food stands and small cafes can be both affordable and delicious.

Shopping at grocery stores can also save you money. If your lodging includes a place to prepare food, use local markets to buy ingredients for simple meals. This is especially useful for breakfast and lunch. A few meals made from groceries can stretch your budget further and give you more to spend on experiences and activities.

Trying the local cuisine is part of the travel experience. Just be mindful of where you spend. Ask locals for recommendations because they will know where to go for good food at fair prices.

Affordable Activities and Attractions

Many destinations offer free or low-cost experiences that are just as rewarding as paid tours. Public parks, city walking tours, and museums with free entry days are excellent examples. Look for local events or festivals that do not charge an entry fee. You will often get an authentic feel for the culture and community without spending money.

Booking tours and activities in advance can also save you money. Once you know your travel dates look for discounts online or through local tourist offices. You may find lower prices for early bookings. Local operators sometimes offer better rates than larger travel agencies because they do not have the same overhead. Always check reviews and credentials to make sure you are choosing a fair price for a quality experience.

Transportation Tips to Save Money

Getting around once you reach your destination should also be affordable. Public transportation, such as buses, trains, and trams, will usually be cheaper than taxis or ride-sharing services. These options might take a bit more time or planning, but the cost savings are worth it. In many countries, you can buy multi-day transit passes that allow unlimited travel on local buses and trains. This can be very cost-effective and easy to use.

If you need a car rental, research pricing carefully. Booking earlier often helps secure lower rates. Compare the cost of renting a car against the total of local transportation and occasional taxis. Sometimes one option is cheaper, other times the reverse is true. Choose what makes the most financial sense for your itinerary.

Money-Saving Travel Hacks

Travel rewards credit cards can help you earn points or miles that you can use toward flights, accommodation or other travel costs. If you use credit cards, make sure you understand how to avoid fees and interest charges. Points and rewards are useful, but only if you pay off your balance regularly and avoid debt.

Travel insurance is another tool that can protect your budget. Affordable insurance can save money in situations where travel plans change or unexpected costs arise. A cancelled flight, lost baggage or medical emergency abroad can be costly. Insurance provides peace of mind and financial protection.

Staying Safe While Saving

Saving money while traveling is a priority for many people but safety should not be overlooked. Be aware of common travel scams and research typical costs so you know when you are being overcharged. Hidden fees for baggage, accommodations or tours can inflate costs if you are not prepared. Always read the fine print before you book anything.

Keeping money safe is equally important. Use a secure travel wallet and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Credit cards offer protections and tracking that cash cannot. Keeping backups of important documents and having a plan in case of lost items will reduce stress and protect your travel budget.

Conclusion

Traveling the world without overpaying is achievable with thoughtful planning and smart strategies. Setting a budget early, being flexible with travel dates, and using cost-saving techniques for flights and accommodation will make your travel budget go further. Eating like a local, using public transportation, and finding free activities helps stretch your dollars even more. The key to affordable travel is balance. Wise choices do not mean cheap experiences. They mean planning better so every dollar adds value to your trip. When you travel smart and avoid overpaying, you can see more of the world for less money. Enjoy the journey and make each adventure count.

AirTags have been very popular since they were first released in 2021 because they’re small, useful, and work with Apple’s Find My network. Now, 5 years later, Apple has released the AirTag 2. One of Apple’s quietest but most impressive updates to its current product lineup though and you already have an AirTag, you might be wondering if it’s worth upgrading.

The short answer is a limited, yes. Maybe.

Flying Saucers

Apple clearly decided that the original AirTag was popular and functional enough that they didn’t want to change the look or design, at least not on the outside. The AirTag 2 has the same dimensions with a UFO shape and quite easily scratched metallic cover. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t make the AirTag in any other color than white and you’ll have to look very closely to be able to tell the AirTag 1 apart from the AirTag 2. The only difference visually is the uppercase lettering on the AirTag 2 which no longer says “designed in California, assembled in China”.

The AirTag 2 is .8 grams and uses the same CR 2032 battery with the same battery life of around one year.

More Ultra

AirTags have an Ultra wide-band chip in them which, in the AirTag 1, is what gives you the ability to be able to visually track them when you’re within about 10 meters or 30 feet. The AirTag 2 now has the next generation ultra wide ban- chip that Apple claims has quote, “up to 50% greater” Precision Finding range, which should be about 15 meters or 50 feet of range. You can see in this video here the results of my own testing.

The AirTag 1 had a magnet that was just enough to hold its weight but gave me no confidence it would stick if there was any movement. The AirTag 2 however has a solid lock to metallic surfaces and feels like it wouldn’t fall off, even with some firm shaking.

Time To Upgrade?

Apple hasn’t made any concrete promises about how much extra Bluetooth range the AirTag 2 has compared to the first generation, it should give you more range and in outdoor areas could be 50-60 meters versus 10-12, a huge jump. And that’s important because Bluetooth is what AirTags use to quietly talk with all of the Apple devices around them. It’s this communication that lets you see where they are through the Find My App.

The AirTag 2 is the same price as the AirTag 1, $29 for one or $99 for a 4 pack and Apple stores have pretty much run out of their remaining AirTag 1 stock, so AirTag 2 is it. For those of you already using AirTags, I wouldn’t replace all of them. The AirTag 2 is a great upgrade but not so much you have to go out and replace your current AirTags. Unless you have one really valuable or important item you want to be able to track to the best of Apple’s ability, then it might be worth upgrading just those AirTags – though in some cases a Ridge Tracker Card may be better.
