haha, I was there consulting on a security project at the time and took the opportunity to explore the area. I did go to Flint Hills but the one thing I regretted most from the dead camera battery was this old farm house. It just struck me as so interesting to look at, would loved to have gotten a photo of it. I actually thought Kansas was visually very stunning, perhaps I'll drive across the US sometime next year and stop by - this time with camera batteries charged!

I was stumbling your site when I came to this article. Informative, but what interested me most is why the hell were you in Kansas? I think like a lot people I suffer from the where-I-live-is-boring syndrome and I give Kansas a top ranking on boredom. What did you see? What was so interesting that you had to photograph it? My guess would be the Flint Hills. Interested to hear a traveler's perspective on Kansas.

@ Byteful:

I basically carry a Casio Exilim for most trips. It's tiny and the battery lasts forever. I'd guess around 300-500 pictures worth. I've also got a couple of Nikon SLRs, but they're all film based, not digital, and haven't been used in a while.

Dual-battery ability sounds useful, but it makes the camera more bulky.

I use a Fujifilim Finepix, which I talk about in <a href="http://byteful.com/blog/2008/08/free-up-your-conscious-mind-for-photography/" rel="nofollow">Free Up Your Conscious Mind for Photography</a>

I think the Nikon's use AAs, and some brands even allow for both (proprietary and AA).

Which camera do you use?
