Awesome book recommendations, I'll add them to my wish list on Amazon. I think no matter where you end up hitchhiking over a long distance you'll have an adventure. Even in the US it would be interesting since it's not so common in the states.

Where are you traveling now?

I loved that book. Also check out Cold Beer and Crocodiles by an author named Roff Smith, about biking all the way around Australia. Parry only sort of went halfway around, out to Adelaide and up, which was cool too, but I've always been interested in seeing Western Oz. There's another book I read recently called Riding with Strangers by Elijah Wald about hitchhiking across the US which was also very good. Wald made a week long trip across the country seemingly for the sole purpose of showing that hitchhiking is not that dangerous and that we're too paranoid about strangers in America. I thought it was a good argument and I'd try it, if I wasn't American. To me crossing the USA would just be a chore, whatever the means. But I'd like to try it in Oz, Europe, or Latin America someday.

Thank you recommending the book. I'm going to put it on my to-read list (which is quite long) so that I can read it hopefully sooner rather than later.

I too would love to hitchhike but I'm not sure I would be able to make the leap. It really requires faith in people and I'm not sure I could trust so many strangers one after the other. Maybe for a ride here or there, but an entire continent, or the world...I'm awed by people like Tom and Kinga Freespirit who can.

I'm all for anything that reduces or doesn't require much planning, I hate it!

Thanks for a great interview, Anil. Reading about Tom Parry's hitchhiking experiences made me think of Kinga Freespirit and her book 'Led by Destiny', covering her amazing hitchhiking adventure around the world. Highly recommended. http://www.kingafreespirit.pl/kingaen/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3&Itemid=5

Although I don't think I'd ever hitchhike myself, especially not when traveling solo, I do enjoy the spontaneous aspect of it. That you can't really plan - you take things as they come and just go with the flow.
