What a fantastic selection of European trail runs! Running is an excellent way to discover new places while still getting a good workout. From the rocky terrain of the Swiss Alps to the coastal routes of Portugal, the trails you’ve highlighted all seem stunning and tough. Your descriptions and images make me want to put on my running shoes and hit the trails right away! Thank you for sharing this fantastic resource for trail runners seeking for new trails in Europe.

I would recommend the Mountainman in the centre of Switzerland. Probably the toughest race of all and amazingly beautiful sceneries all aournd the Swiss Alps! I was there and i swear it’s the best i’ve ever attended.

Yes, they really are. Most of these races follow some more or less famous hiking trails (so you can challenge yourself at any time, not only the day of the race) and a few of these races encourage hikers to participate: the Trail Napoléon for example offers as well a shorter and easier option (16km, 700m+) on the same day for hikers.

As a general rule, don’t be put off by the scary names, for many slow “runners” all these races are technically no more than hikes. The maximum time to complete the race allows often fast hikers to finish without having to run a single mile.
