I think I remember you Twittering about that. I get the impression that thefts are a bit more common in Central and South America than Asia and Africa.

I did some searching and couldn't find many reliable robbery statistics since they're not kept specifically for tourists or foreigners. Not sure if it's bad luck or just more likely to happen there - either case I'm sorry to hear that. It seems to come in bunches too, I've had friends who were robbed only to get robbed several months later again while traveling!

Wow, what a great story -- you wrote it really well. We were robbed in Guatemala City four months ago by scam artists...and three times since in Costa Rica! Every theft we've had (five) occured in Latin America even though we traveled through far poorer countries in Africa, India and Asia.

Loved the story, looking forward to part V.

Probably true.

And when/if we've had bad, or less than optimal, travel experiences, we can appreciate our other travel experiences so much more.

Hey Erica,
I think we all need these types of experiences to make our travels three dimensional:)

Suspenseful indeed. What a (terrible) travel experience! I've never heard about anything like it.

The best part:
"It feels safe and clean. The key word is CLEAN."
