Tragically, once a majority, the Germans of this city were sold for money to Germany by the Ceausescu Regime. Today, they’re a small minority. In the past 800,000 German Saxons lived in post WW II Romania, but today I think 30-40.000 live.
The city’s historic German name is Hermannstadt. The Hungarian one is Szeben.

In reply to Julia. That would be a good adventure. There's a bit of a gap in the rail system in parts of former Yugoslavia (I tried train between cities there) but think Sarajevo > Buchrest > Sibiu can be done. Who know where will win this year, maybe you can make a 3-parter :) By the way, I'll be in Istanbul for most of March, if you happen to pass through!

I forgot one more thing: in 2007, Sibiu was the European capital of culture. It is worth mentioning it.

Unfortunately there is so little about Sibiu in this post. What can I see, what can I do in Sibiu? Ok, there you have the link to ASTRA Museum, but what about those places inside town? What about the citated, the once hidden grain warehouses? The first farmacy in this area of Europe? The church in front of which Vlad Țepeș’ (Vlad the Impaler – Dracula for so many people) son was killed? And so many others…
