Withdrawing cash from an ATM is becoming something we have to do less frequently and often we’re left to use the closest one. Convenience over caution because when you need cash, it’s often on short notice.

To prevent yourself from falling prey to several ATM scams that can happen if you used a compromised machine, here are some tests to always follow. You can watch the video above before reading the highlights below.

Twist The Reader

Skimming, where the magnetic stripe of a credit card is copied by a fake reader is becoming less common since most cards now use embedded chips. Still, many banks in the United States issue cards where the magnetic stripe can still be used and therefore stolen. What you want to do is, before using any ATM, twist the card reader if it’s protruding and look for any looseness or signs of tampering.

You can see in the video above how to handle various types of ATMs and card readers. Also, make sure to check the keypad as well.

Choose Wisely

Where you withdraw cash can also improve the odds of not coming across a skimmer or a shimmer (the latter used to steal credit card chip data). ATMs found in and around banks tend to have good camera coverage and security nearby. Guards, cameras, and lots of foot traffic make criminals avoid these types of ATMs in most cases because the chance of getting caught or the skimmer being discovered are higher.

The crooks will have to return to get their skimmers in order to extract the card data from them so they value not losing one they’ve placed. Many ATMs have the scams built in though, here’s how to handle ATM currency conversions.

This post was written by Ralph Starks, a blogger and traveler who enjoys exploring the world in the best ways possible.

There is a distinct moment of pure magic when you open your laptop at a beachside cafe or a mountain cabin and realize you are successfully working from the other side of the planet. The digital nomad lifestyle offers an incredible sense of freedom. You can design your own schedule, explore historic cities on your lunch breaks, and escape the traditional corporate cubicle. However, that romantic vision of remote work often collides with reality the first time you try to secure a payment while navigating a weak Wi-Fi connection, a massive time zone difference, and an urgent client deadline.

Operating a location-independent business requires far more than a passport and a reliable laptop. It demands high-level organization and a portable operational backend that moves seamlessly with you. When you are constantly switching countries, the last thing you want to worry about is a chaotic administrative workflow that delays your incoming payments.

If you want to protect your remote cash flow and ensure your global business runs smoothly from any coordinate on earth, you need a standardized billing system. This guide serves as your ultimate toolkit for professionalizing your remote invoices so you can stay paid, organized, and free to wander.

Step 1: Optimize for Offline Accessibility

The biggest mistake a traveling freelancer or remote consultant can make is relying on complex, heavy cloud software that requires a flawless high-speed internet connection just to load a billing screen. When you are catching a train through Europe or working from a remote island, your digital connectivity will fluctuate constantly.

Your administrative workflow must be resilient enough to handle unpredictable technical environments.

Keep local backup versions of your core business documents right on your hard drive. This allows you to draft financial requests, update project tracking files, and compile client summaries while you are completely offline or flying on a long-haul flight. Once you reconnect to cellular data or hotel internet, you can dispatch your materials instantly without wasting hours waiting for heavy web applications to load.

Step 2: Clear Up Time Zone and Currency Ambiguity

When your business ecosystem spans multiple continents, communication gaps can happen very easily. If you are a designer based in Tokyo billing a marketing manager in New York for a project executed while you were traveling through Bali, simple dates and figures can quickly become confusing.

You must state your transaction parameters with absolute clarity to prevent long email chains and administrative delays.

Always specify the exact currency required for the payout, whether that is US Dollars, Euros, or British Pounds. Additionally, write out your payment deadlines explicitly using calendar dates rather than vague phrases like due in two weeks. State your preferred local payment methods and include all necessary global bank routing details, such as SWIFT codes or international bank account numbers, right on your paperwork so corporate accounting teams can process your funds without asking for clarifications.

Step 3: Standardize with Portable and Universally Accessible Formats

When you submit a financial request to a client’s corporate office, your paperwork moves through an internal chain of project managers, department heads, and accounting personnel. If you send your billing details in an unformatted email text block or an editable text document, you are exposing your business to formatting errors and prolonged payment cycles.

Your administrative output needs to look completely polished, uniform, and immutable regardless of what device or operating system your client opens it on.

Utilizing a clean, professional PDF invoice template ensures that your business presentation remains perfectly locked and readable everywhere. A standardized digital layout allows you to organize your contact data, itemize your project milestones, calculate currency balances, and present legal terms in a highly scannable format. Because PDF files are universally compatible and cannot be accidentally modified, they move through corporate approval pipelines significantly faster than open text formats.

Step 4: Track Transaction and Currency Exchange Fees

Living as a global digital nomad means your money will frequently cross international borders, and every cross-border transfer carries a financial cost. International bank wires, digital payment platforms, and credit card processors all charge varying transaction percentages and hidden currency conversion margins.

You must track these micro-expenses routinely to understand your true business profitability.

Keep a dedicated ledger where you record the exact gross amount billed against the final net deposit that hits your bank account. If you realize that international bank wires are draining thirty dollars from every client payment, you can adjust your strategy by shifting to digital wallets or requesting that clients cover the processing fees in your initial contracts. Monitoring these leakages helps you maintain healthy profit margins while traveling.

Step 5: Establish a Fixed Administrative Routine

When you are constantly exploring a new city or balancing an active travel itinerary, it is incredibly easy to let your business administration fall by the wayside. You tell yourself that you will handle your client billing over the weekend, but then a weekend trip happens, and suddenly you are three weeks behind on your paperwork.

Take control of your financial health by dedicating a specific, non-negotiable block of time each week to managing your business backend.

Set a calendar reminder for every Friday morning or Monday afternoon to review your open projects, dispatch your milestone requests, track your travel expenses, and review your incoming bank deposits. Treating your location-independent business with this level of operational discipline lowers your stress levels, stabilizes your personal runway, and gives you the ultimate luxury: the financial freedom to keep exploring the world on your own terms.

Costa Rica’s capital city is the main entry point into a diverse number of stops across the country but few stay and see San Jose. Aside from having a bad safety reputation, it’s not the green, coastal place many tourists come to Costa Rica to see. San Jose is a city that will surprise many visitors though with safe spaces, historic foods, and a vibrant atmosphere not to be missed.

Watch the video here to see what San Jose has to offer tourists.

Use Your Guides

A good guide will help you get around to understand the best neighborhoods in San Jose. There are several where you’ll experience a high degree of security, while others should be visited mainly during the day. This goes for downtown; it’s where you’ll find the Mercado Central, Teatro Nacional, and Mercado Borbon. Only open during the day, be mindful of your belongings in the surrounding streets and don’t draw attention to yourself.

It’s in the two major markets here though that you’ll find some of the best and oldest San Jose foods from Soda Tala to must-visit ice cream shop, La Sorbetera de Lolo Mora.

There’s also Bario Escalante, a hipster and lively part of San Jose that has a reputation for food, nightlife, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Ride Share Around

Ride share apps and Uber are commonly used in San Jose and make it easy to get around without having to worry about negotiating a fare price. They also make tracking and sharing your movements with friends and relatives possible so you have have more safety as you travel the in San Jose. A good guide will set you up with an introduction into San Jose for a good first day but then you have the next to explore on your own.

Not spending at least a day in San Jose is missing a lot on Costa Rican culture that emanates to the rest of the country from here.

This post was written by Ralph Starks, a blogger and traveler who enjoys exploring the world in the best ways possible.

Here’s a little secret. The best horse racing events in the world aren’t really about which animal finishes first.

Yes, the race itself is what generates hundreds of billions of dollars worldwide. It’s why people gather, but what most in the audience are really looking for is an experience.

Many people are very surprised to learn that events like the Kentucky Derby, or for that matter, any race, last for less than 120 seconds. Is that really what draws hundreds of thousands of people to Louisville every year? Of course not.

Fans in the stands want to be part of something. The cultural experience, the luxury accommodations, the excitement. Those are the things on offer at the most spectacular horse racing destinations in the world.

Let’s take a look at venues that are genuinely worth your time and attention.

Overview

What is our criteria? There are literally thousands of racetracks all over the world. What makes a venue worthy of inclusion on a limited list like the one you’re reading right now?

While it’s debatable what details account for the very best horse racing venues, we decided to focus on a combination of the type of experience the location delivers, as well as its pedigree and history.

If you look at websites like this one, you’ll find races happening all over the world: https://www.twinspires.com/200-signup/

Most of them are worth your time and attention if you’re a fan of the sport, but at the same time, it would be impossible, or at least not practical, to visit every track.

What we’ve got for you today is nothing short of the best of the best. Let’s take a look.

Churchill Downs

Obviously, it would have been absurd to make a list of the best horse racing venues in the world and not include the home of the Kentucky Derby.

Churchill Downs was founded in the 19th century and began hosting prestigious events almost immediately. The Derby itself is the biggest draw. In fact, it’s the most-watched horse racing event in the world, attracting a global audience of approximately 20 million people.

Every year, more than 150,000 people head to Louisville to watch the event in person. If you have a big budget and a healthy patience for chaos, that could be a good option for you.

On the other hand, if you’re okay with skipping all the fanfare, you can still visit and even tour this historic location nearly all year round. Churchill Downs holds races throughout the summer, all of which are more affordable and accessible than the Derby.

It’s a great way to visit the most famous location in horse racing without spending so much money that you might have to postpone your eventual retirement.

Royal Ascot

Churchill Downs is indeed the most famous track in the world, but fans of racing often consider Royal Ascot the very pinnacle of the sport, at least over in Europe.

The event has been held for more than 300 years and to this day serves as a centerpiece of the English social season. It’s held in June at Ascot Racecourse and takes place over five days of festivity.

Like Churchill Downs, Ascot Racecourse is open all year round. However, if you have the chance to go during Royal Ascot, you certainly should.

Not only is it the pinnacle of English high society’s summer social calendar, but it is also just a genuinely unique racing experience. Each day of the event begins with a royal procession. If you’re interested in seeing literal monarchs on parade in full finery, this is your chance.

Flemington

Flemington Racetrack is home to the Melbourne Cup. The Melbourne Cup is known, both in Australia and abroad, as the race that stops a nation.

Millions of Australians tune in every year, to the point that widespread productivity sometimes ceases.

Though this event does not quite have the history of the last two we’ve described, it has been around for more than 150 years and continues to serve as one of the most important races in the world.

Honorable Mention

We’d need a lot more space to fully do the topic of prestigious racetracks justice. The three featured above are, beyond serious dispute, the most famous in the world. However, there are many more worth your time and attention.

Some are growing in fame, for example, Dubai. Others are simply enjoyable destinations in their own right. If you want an extremely pleasant family outing oriented, at least partially, around horse racing, you’ll have a good experience in places like the Finger Lakes, where natural beauty and high levels of activity combine for a pleasant vacation experience.

There are lots of great tracks out there, all of which are worth taking a trip to.
