How to Tip When Paying Part Giftcard Part Real Money

This is the mini-dilemma I was faced with last night. I thought I’d pose the question to you all out there.

What do you do when you pay with a giftcard and then some real money? Do you take a percentage of the total of the tab or just the total of real money?

I went down the middle and took the average of the total and the “real” money total. Does this make any sense…I’m not sure, but would love to hear some opinions on this.

Thanks!

  1. Kim says:

You tip according to the total amount due of the bill and you pay that with the real money, assuming you can’t add the tip onto the gift card.

I am fascinated by this…hmmm, well guess she won’t hate me, nor spit in my food. Sweet, the middle road worked for me on this one!

    Thanks for the advice :)
