For those of you who don’t know what a hookah is there is a nifty picture for you. They are really getting popular, I didn’t realize how much so until I saw them being offered up for rent on the beaches of Boracay – one of the Philippine Islands.

Most of the hookah bars/cafes in the DC area are dominated by Arab owners who try to recreate Cairo or one of the other local places that litter the Middle East. Lots of Arabic pop music, strong coffee, and terrible service.

If you’re looking for a change of pace and a better smoke I recommend the Shisha Lounge in Sterling, VA. The service is great, the music is rock, and the desert is well work the $3. Might I add the hookas are brand new and well maintained and you’ll quickly see the difference between Shisha Lounge and the average run-of-the-mill hookah bar.

DJs on Thursday nights, half of on Monday (I think) and belly dancing from time to time. I didn’t get to see any of those but maybe next time.

Nice change of the pace – but I must say I enjoy the exotic ambiance of the more traditional places 😉
