5 Travel Tips For Myanmar

This is a guest post by Fresh Wes who recently participated in the Semester at Sea program through which he visited 10 different countries.

  • 1. Place to Visit – One of the most fascinating stops our group made was to Inle Lake, which is located in the mountains of Shan State. The sole method of transport is via wooden boats, most outfitted with small outboard engines. This makes for a relaxing journey across the calm waters of the lake. I recommend staying on the lake itself, in a large cabana, overlooking the water. Sunrises and sunsets on the water are absolutely incredible.
  • 2. Currency Exchange – The national currency, the kyat, is heavily regulated by the government. Foreign travelers trying to find a fair exchange rate must avoid any banks. You will likely find the value of a US dollar to be 10-15 times as high when exchanging currency on the street. Be careful though, as this is not considered legal, but for some it is a necessity to make international travel cheaper.

Blissful Travel Selects foXnoMad As One Of 20 Recommended Blogs

The travel and photography blog Blissful Travel has selected foXnoMad as one of its 20 recommended blogs. Some of the rest of the list include HoboTraveler, My Marrakesh, and I Love Philippines Too.

Blissful Traveler is written by Erica Johansson, a freelance photographer and writer. I discovered the blog after my participation in the Travel Rants Blog Carnival and has made it to my blogroll and RSS reader ever since. Blissful Travel’s stories cover a variety of travel related topics on the lighter side, but the photography really sets it apart.

13 Elaborate Travel Scams

Wandering around any foreign city (domestic or otherwise) lowers your guard and increases your profile making you susceptible to scams. The Time Online lists 13 elaborate and unorthodox scams to beware of.

You??re tired, there??s a queue at the taxi rank, so you accept the cheery offer of an unofficial taxi. From this point on, a good outcome is that you??ll be overcharged, or forced to stop off at the driver??s brother??s souvenir shop on the way to your hotel.

Many of the tricks seemed to be based out of South America but even the savvy traveler can get caught off guard anywhere. A good piece of advice is never to accept money (or drugs) since you can be put in the place of a crook. Also only ever trust the travelers you know, many of the scam artists tend to enlist locals with backpacks to make you feel safer.

Our UNICEF Site Closing Down For Now

I launched a personal donation page for foXnoMad and all of you mid-2006 with the hopes of raising $,1000 before 2007.

We reached our goal that year with your help. Since then our little page has helped to raise $1,454.81. UNICEF is doing some restructuring of its site, so our page is being retired. A new redesigned page site slated for sometime in April.

There are some other great (and free) ways to help the world around you – donate some frequent flier miles, click to give free mammograms, or define words for free rice.

Thank you again for your contributions!!

How To Bargain Your Way To A Good Price

Bargaining your way to a good price is easy if you??re firm and use the negotiating disadvantages of being a tourist to your benefit – here??s how.

US Travelers Check Credit Card Receipts For Full Numbers And Get New Ones When You Return

Travelers outside of the US who use charge while shopping should check their receipts for full credit card numbers. If you see that your copy of any printed (or written) receipt has all 16 digits, request a new card from your bank when you return home.
