What You Need To Know To Be An Expert Traveler In Airport Security Lines

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the US is experimenting with special lines for ‘expert’ travelers. The idea is to separate different groups – families, casual, and expert travelers to reduce the time people spend in security lines.

This scheme is likely not to take off since smart travelers are simply going in the shorter line. One thing is for sure however, no matter where you are in the US you can save time in security lines with these expert tricks.

  • Wear Thick Socks – Take of your shoes/slippers when there are 2 people left in between you and the plastic trays. Tie shoes with laces to your carry on and slippers around baggage handles. Thick socks are better suited to walking around on dirty (sometimes wet) airport floors.
  • Take Your Belt Of And Throw It In Your Carry-On – The biggest time trap in airport security lines is after you pass through the metal detectors. Avoid setting them off at all costs otherwise you’ll lose several minutes being hand-screened by TSA staff.

What You Don’t Need For International Travel

Many people know what to bring on a long trip but over-pack because they don’t know what to leave home. The experianced traveler brings less with them every time they head out the door.

Many of the common items we have with us everyday simply are useless or we can live without when skipping around the globe. Here are a list of some useless items to forget about.

  • Any Electronics Other Than A Laptop – A laptop is larger and heavier than an iPod or cell phone, but can double as many more things – using Skype to make calls is one of them. You can also watch some DVDs you ripped and keep your online accounts safe by avoiding Internet cafes.
  • More Than 1 Pair Of Shoes – Stick to a single pair of black tennis shoes. Kind on your feet and can be used for more formal occasions. Remember, you’re a traveler and probably won’t see the people at the opera again (of you’re feel self-conscious).

Hazlo Simple, Spanish Hacks Launched

Friend and fellow blogger Felipe Cornejo has begun blogging about little computer hacks that make life easier at Hazlo Simple.

Many of the posted suggestions are great for travelers; international perspective on the rock music scene, following the Champions League live, or pronouncing English words.

Unfortunately there is no English version of the site (I hope coming soon, hint hint 😉 but Google does a pretty good job. The site is still a baby so feed it some comments in any language you choose. Even if you don’t speak Spanish drop an hola or hello…Felipe speaks both languages.

Keep Track Of World Times Despite Changing Daylight Savings Times: timeanddate.com

Find out what time it is in the city you’re visiting, going to call, or spending a layover in at timeanddate.com. I recently had a need to find out the time in a few places around Asia that weren’t standard deviations from GMT. The times are accurate and automatically updated to account for the different daylight savings schedules changing this season around the world.

The site also allows you to customize the set of clocks by city, region, or time. Although it’s no replacement FoxClocks, timeanddate.com works well for times you don’t need to keep permanent track of. Most of the countries in the world follow a daylight savings schedule and come spring and fall it’s a good idea to keep track of them.
