Economic Downturn In The US Won’t Be Good For Air Travel

The turmoil in the US economy, rising fuel prices, and merger-for-survivals will cause airfare hikes and additional charges for now free services. As I predicted at the beginning of the year, mergers between the major airlines are happening to keep them in business.

According to the International Herald Tribune expect higher fares as a result of fewer airlines.

“It’s a very bad idea,” said Oberstar, whose state is home to Northwest’s headquarters. He said he expected “a cascade of carriers finding partners” if the Delta-Northwest combination was allowed to go forward, with fewer choices and higher prices for consumers.

Low-fare airlines will begin to creep their prices up and the fares of the large, newly merged companies increase. They won’t be “low fare” anymore, but lower fare. Expect to pay for things you now take for granted as well.

Unplug Airport Vending Machines To Create Outlets

Frequent travelers can create electrical opportunities by unplugging vending machines in the absence of easily accessible outlets. Most airports restrict the number of outlets they make available to travelers.

Although many vending machine outlets are locked or bolted into the wall, look around other smaller devices such as lighted advertisements and video games.

This advice is best during non-peak airport traffic hours like when you’re spending the night. You can also check for specific outlet locations at the airport of your choice on the Airport Wiki (the site wasn’t working when I last checked though).

The AirPower Wiki chronicles the location of power-outlets in the world’s airports. Those of us who’ve had three hours to catch up on email and recharge before making another eight-hour flight know what it is to be a voltotropic voyager.

The Path Of Mistakes Not Written By Lonely Planet’s Thomas Kohnstamm

The Lonely Planet writer, Thomas Kohnstamm, who admitted never having visited the countries he wrote about should have been writing about his adventures in lying.

He says that after having sex with a waitress on a table after hours, he reviewed the restaurant with the words “the table service is friendly”.

He also said he never visited Colombia, despite being hired to write about it.

Instead, the 33 year old writer says he got the information from a Colombian intern he was dating at the time – seriously hurting the reputation of the BBC Worldwide owned series. Had Kohnstamm said the same thing 50 years ago it wouldn’t even have been a story. As Tom Brosnahan once told me, before the 70s, most travel writers never left their living rooms.

Once the world began to open up, prices began to fall, and the global travel boom took off, tourists began flocking to the guides written by their peers who had actually been to exotic places. Over the last 4 decades, libraries, bookstores, and magazines have been flooded with entire sections devoted to first-hand travel guides. Kohnstamm’s problem was that he lied to fit in, when he should of been writing about why he stood out.

3 Fun Things To Do At The Airport When If Your Flight Gets Canceled

Airports can be wonderful places to spend unexpected recreational time. With airlines canceling flights left and right, chances are you’ll be stuck in Minneapolis, Atlanta, or Minneapolis again.

If your flight is canceled, take a deep breath and enjoy all of the relaxing things you probably don’t get to do in regular life when you want to.

  • Get Drunk – Airports aren’t littered with bars for nothing. Have a few drinks somewhere near your gate. You don’t have to drive anywhere and if you’re lucky there will be enough alcohol left in your system when the plane takes off for a solid block of sleep.
  • Read Tabloids For Free – Many people spend a few minutes each time they are in grocery store lines reading celebrity gossip, dirt, and sex. Read as many as you want for free or buy a couple. When you’re done reading place them next to you with a piece of paper that reads: “For Sale: $1”. People will buy them, trust me.
