Visiting [North] Cyrpus

You may not know the (controversial) history of Cyprus – a large island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is not likely to be most peoples vacation destination despite its natural beauty and cheap prices. Since the north part of the island is not internationally recognized the only way to get there is by plane or boat leaving from Turkey.

If you are feeling adventurous it’s a trip well worth taking. My cousin recently visited and had this to say. She also took these pictures.

The first thing was the roads are exactly like England, I mean cars are going to left (right line is coming). Cyprus is a former British colony and there are some British hotels there, also quite a few Brits as well. They don’t have many cafes and restaurants, I found Cyprus pretty poor actually…and food and drinks are so cheap (like a bottle of vodka absolut is just 15 YTL – $7 US).

As you can see from the pictures it is so empty because the Cypriots told us that Cyprus is a summer place to live, business is dead in the winter.

They are not very fond of Turkish people – most of them working as taxi drivers and in restaurants. There is also a high Kurdish population. I was shocked to get on a dolmus (small 7-8 person bus) and hear everyone speaking Kurdish.

You can also read this post on her blog about the trip. Feel free to ask her any questions in the comments 8)

Linkedin Goes Global

Linkedin is a good resource to use if you are looking to make professional connections, find a new job, or promote yourself in the work place.

Linkedin’s network has also grown to a good working size internationally and you can read some good tips to maxmizing your Linkedin potential (thanks Lifehacker). There is also this old L’avant Poste about it.

At the Big Bowl with Fredo

Where else to take your friends who come to visit from out of town?

Get some drinks before…

…then walk over to the Stir Fry bar,

and make your Big Bowl creation. Though I don’t recommend having a Guinness if your use spicy kung pao to season your meal. Even the greatest love for Guinness won’t be enough to overcome the urge to vomit. Go with the Red Rock Merlot instead 😉

Download Music and Videos From Campuses That Block File Sharing

Many college freshmen probably noticed that their schools block peer-to-peer programs such as Limewire. That means you can’t illegally download porno music from your dorm.

There is an easy way to get around this problem and here is how to do it. You’ll need two computers, the one you left with your folks at home and the laptop you are going to take to school.

  • 1. Download and install LogMeIn to the desktop at home. If you don’t know how to, refer to this earlier post.
  • 2. Once you have setup LogMeIn, use your laptop to connect to your home computer. You should see a screen like this:

  • 3. Install Limewire or whatever file sharing program you use to your home computer.
  • 4. Open Limewire then select Tools > Options > Saving.
    • Set the default location you’d like to save your Mp3.
  • 5. Using your laptop connect to the home computer. Open Limewire and download to your hearts content.
  • 6. Then simply email the files you downloaded from the LogMeIn window to yourself.
  • 7. Check your email from your laptop and you’ve got your music and videos!

It is a bit more of hassle than if nothing was blocked – but what else are you going to do in between drinking beer and skipping classes?

If you have a Gmail account you can send yourself a ton of songs. For videos use the free MailBigFile service (up to 512MB).

This works for downloading anything, for example if you want to show your sorority sisters pictures you left on your machine at home. Hotels (and military bases) also block bandwidth hogs such as Limewire so this may come in handy when you are traveling.

Of course if you have any questions please let me know in the comments and I’ll answer as best I can. Good luck, and remember not to break any rules or laws!
