Chores for Charity

As you know we here at L’avant Poste have been collecting donations for UNICEF all of 2006 – with a goal of raising $1000 by the end of the year. Well we’re now in crunch time, so I’m offering my services in exchange for $10 towards UNICEF.

  • I’ll hand wash your car (yes I know it’s cold, but I’ll do it 😉 )
  • I’ll perform any work you might need done on a computer. From upgrades, spyware removals, to other repairs. You name it and I’ll do it if at all possible.
  • Sober rides on the weekends – through the end of December I’ll give you and two other people a sober ride home.
    • You’ll have to let me know in advance though.
  • I’ll pick up your groceries for you.

These offers are only feasible in the DC metro area. Please email me if you’re interested in any of the above, or if you’ve got other chores you need done.

PS. For you international readers, I’ll do whatever I can from over here…just let me know if I can help.

It’s for a good cause and I’ll be on call to help you with your chores. Thanks, -aop

Left-Handers Think More Quickly

From the good ol’ BBC:

Connections between the left and right hand sides or hemispheres of the brain are faster in left-handed people, a study in Neuropsychology shows.

The fast transfer of information in the brain makes left-handers more efficient when dealing with multiple stimuli.

Dr Cherbuin explained that people tended to use both hemispheres for tasks which are very fast or very hard and which require interpretation of a lot of information, such as computer games or driving in heavy traffic or playing sport.

Chartered psychologist, Dr Steve Williams said left-handed people tended to be better at using both sides of the brain.

“It’s certainly very interesting. It’s always been said that left-handers are different from right-handers in that the are less consistent with their left-handedness.

“This seems to go with evidence that left-handers use both sides of the brain for language – that they are more bicerebral. They get faster at it because they’re having to use both sides of the brain more.”

“In football, being able to shoot with either foot is a huge asset (each foot like each hand is under opposite-side control) and I’ve heard that left-handers tend to have better backhands in tennis,” he added.

Get Around Instant Messaging Blocks

If you are at school or at work and can’t seem to get your instant messaging service to work, try Meebo. It’s a free and useful way to get around those pesky Internet filters. You don’t have to sign up – you just use your existing AIM, MSN, Yahoo, or Google Chat username and password.

Now you’ve got to trust the Meebo folks not share your data, and they say they are committed to protecting your privacy. I’ve gotten some feedback and looked into it – and I’ve already used their service and if you have to, go for it.

Another nice perk – all of the connections are encrypted – so if the IT department is reading your IMs as they travel along the network, all they’ll see is garbled junk. Pretty cool.

The Meebo site is translated into every language you can think of for you international readers 😉

Thanks Fredo!

Get Money Back From Amazon.com

I found out about this neat little service from a co-worker. In case you don’t know, Amazon.com guarantees prices for 30 days after you purchase an item. For example if you buy a book for $10 and then 2 weeks later the price drops to $8, they’ll put the $2 difference back on your credit card.

Of course they don’t notify you if the price changes – and they are betting you’ll be too lazy to do it yourself.

refundplease.com is a free service that doesn’t require you to register with anything more than your email address. Whenever you buy something from Amazon (Christmas is coming up) or the L’avant Poste store you just go to refundplease, then enter your email and the purchase number.

If the price changes within 30 days you’ll get an email notifying you and with the link to get your refund. Click the link, and you’ll get some money back on that maxed-out credit card of yours 🙂

Allsports Grand Prix

In the heart of redneck Virginia (aka. Sterling) is a quite professional go-kart racing experience. With a family of French people dominating the 8 minute course I was almost killed in a head on collision because I lost control on a turn, 260, and got mashed up by a French daredevil. There was even a little kid in the group who lapped me twice that little bugger.

The cars are 6.5 horsepower and this is a fun as all hell evening out. It’s expensive though – about $20 for an 8 minute course. But you do get cool racing gear, a helmet, and on your way home you’ll feel like your Honda is a go-kart 😀

Also, you get a little print out showing your times and a comparison with some of the other drivers that have raced before you. Pretty neat.

I look horrible here, but it’s only because I had a head condom on so as not to pass my lice to the helmet. Notice Winky’s uniform is 3 sizes too small. By the way, is it called a uniform ❓

The flags make things look more important.

Oh yeah, and they have a five minute safety briefing before you can race. This picture above sums it up.

Me looking like Bobby De Niro. Another terrible picture. You can see the rest here.
