The Swedish company TerraNet is developing a mobile phone system that doesn’t rely on cell towers that makes phone calls in remote areas possible.

The technology makes each mobile phone a mini-tower with a range up to 1 kilometer. Each phone can forward a signal, so someone else within range extends the network even further.

The lack of towers means that users would be able to make calls for free and this is causing the industry to hamper TerraNet’s efforts. There are other ways you can keep in touch for free during the meantime – calling from your laptop with Skype, or using Iowa for free long distance.
