10 Money-Saving and Vacation Tips

Some research, carrying a good guidebook, and setting a budget for your trip can help keep your vacation expenses in check.

Price of Transportation (POT) Vacation Budget Rule

Narrow your vacation budget by using your transportation costs as an indicator on how much you should spend on your next trip. Transportation costs include anything you??ll need to get to and move around your destination.

Setting an upper limit, breaking down your expenses, and making a list of what you??re willing to sacrifice can be done on a large post-it note or jailbroken iPod Touch in roughly 10-15 minutes.

Zagat Airline Survey

Zagat, known for its restaurant ratings and reviews, has put the airlines to the test. Both Virgin Atlantic and Midwest scored well in terms of food, comfort, and service in the US. Singapore scored highly for international carriers. The results are detailed and worth a slow skim. Check out both the international [pdf] and US domestic versions [pdf] which also contain airport information.

CLEARed In Denver

The CLEAR program, which essentially fast lanes registered travelers through airport security, is expanding to airports across the nation. CLEAR costs about $100; and your background and biometric data. The pending implementation of CLEAR in Denver sparked some interesting comments between ::future gringo:: and I.

I think it??s amazing how willing people (especially in America) are to give up their personal freedoms, privacy, and rights to the government.

Nobody trusts the government with their tax dollars, but gives in to every asinine security screening; phone taps, and massive databases that contain records of anything imaginable.

How To Create A Simple Vacation Budget

After reading Get Rich Slowly’s 10 money-saving vacation tips I became convinced that setting a trip budget is a great way to save money without cutting out the experience. The problem is that it takes time and many frequent travelers, be it for business or pleasure, tend to pack, buy tickets, and tell mom at the last minute – let alone leave time for creating a budget.

Setting an upper limit, breaking down your expenses, and making a list of what you’re willing to sacrifice can be done on a large post-it note or jailbroken iPod Touch in roughly 10-15 minutes.

  • Set An Upper Limit – You need an absolute maximum that you will be spending during your entire vacation. Use the POT (price of transportation) vacation budget rule to get this figure, then divide it by the number of days you’ll be traveling. It’s easier to keep a 24 hour budget.

Price Of Transportation (POT) Vacation Budget Rule

Narrow your vacation budget by using your transportation costs as an indicator on how much you should spend on your next trip. Transportation costs include anything you’ll need to get to and move around your destination. That includes the cost of plane tickets, rental car fees when you get there, or metro rides. The price of transportation vacation budget rule differs slightly for short and more expensive trips.

  • Domestic Travel and Discount Flights -Your budget for any given day should be half of your original transportation cost (whatever method you used to get there – for example plane tickets).
    • Lets’ say all of your transportation costs to a cheap destination, say Chicago from Detroit for $69 both ways, plus the cost of a cab to the airport are $30, totaling $99. The maximum you budget for a given day should be $49.50.

The World’s Worst Airports

The New York Times conducted an informal survey with many airports across Europe making the list.

I think it must be significant when everyone gives the same response for their No. 1 choice for Europe??s worst: London??s Heathrow was cited by 100 percent of respondents, as scientists say.

Most everyone complained of others, as well. Charles de Gaulle outside Paris came in a close second. Leonardo da Vinci at Fiumicino, near Rome, and the Frankfurt airport won honorable, or should I say dishonorable, mentions.

No surprise that Frankfurt is one of the worst airports on the list. The best airports to get stuck in these days are in Asia.
