Risk Analysis by a Child

Some interesting logic by Bruce Schneier.

Consider, for example, the risk faced by a lost child. Schneier says the safest strategy is for the child to pick out the nearest nice-looking stranger and ask for help.

That’s the math part. By making the kid choose the stranger, and not the other way around, Schneier says the odds are that the child will pick someone who will help him. If he waits for an adult to help him, he’s increased the odds that the adult is a predator who has targeted him.

“When was the last time you talked to a stranger and got mugged by him?” he asked rhetorically. “People are basically good. If that were not true, society would have fallen apart a long time ago.”

Besides, he says, kids have good people instincts.

Schneier says that most people have a pathology about risk that prevents them from dealing with security threats rationally.

Who Needs Studying?

It being finals week and all I saw a post on the Bujur site about the countries who top the list when it comes to the amount of hours spent studying per week.

  • Korea 49.9
  • Turkey 48.6
  • Mexico 46.9
  • Greece 44.9
  • Italy 40.8

What struck me as interesting is the fact that none of the richest countries in the world are in that top 5. In fact the average US student spends 33 hours per week studying, however will likely be paid 3 times the amount of money compared to these other countries.

So, more evidence that studying only measures the amount of work you do…not intelligence? Let’s check out this list of successful dropouts!

  • 18 billionaires
  • 10 Nobel Prize Winners
  • 8 US Presidents [insert George Bush joke here]

Skeleton Arrested for DUI

Nicole Richie was arrested early Monday for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.

You know this can’t be true, cause a beer has more than 5 calories. Unless she was drunk on oxygen or high on life that b*tch ain’t ingesting anything more that a few molecules at a time.

Oh, snap!
