How the Airlines Determine Ticket Prices

Same as everything else, supply and demand.

The most important variable is competition. Until airline deregulation in the late 1970s, rates for flights were more-or-less determined by distance. Now, ticket prices have almost nothing to do with how far you’re traveling and more to do with how many airlines are competing for your business.

An airline will adjust its ticket prices on a minute-by-minute basis, depending on what competitors are charging. But how do they know the other guys’ prices? Each airline enters its rates into the Airline Tariff Publishing Co. computer system, which in turn supplies information about all the others.

Snakes on a Plane, Almost

Someone got caught in southeast Asia trying to smuggle in a bunch of reptiles (poor things, even though some are snakes). I guess the smuggler had never heard of X-Ray technology which allows airport screeners to see the insides of luggage from a TV screen [INSERT *DUH* HERE]

Well, glad he got caught, I hear Thailand’s prisons are spectacular this time of year.

Bratislava, Slovakia

Peaceluvbug has just posted a new blog on her recent adventure to Bratislava. She’ll be posting more about the culture and travel over there in eastern Europe – but for now you can read her post and view the pictures.

Also, this adds another country to our map. If you go anywhere in the US or abroad that we haven’t posted from, just send me an email (aop1980 @ gmail.com) with a little something about your trip so we can share in the experience.

Azeri Art Festival This Week in Washington DC

If you are in the area:

The Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies and the Azerbaijani Student Association of Georgetown University present an exhibit of Azeri Art. You can get more information from the official website – if you can’t go, no worries, I’ll try to make it out there and bring back pictures for you 😉

80 Percent of Americans Don’t Have a Passport

That is nearly twice the European average.

If you don’t have a passport (no matter your nationality) go out and get one. They are not more than $20 for US citizens and the process is rather quick and easy. If you can travel outside of the country you live in, take my word for it nothing else you do will open your eyes as much.

Until then, stay tuned to us here at L’avant Poste. I’m working on getting more stories and pictures for you…hmm foreshadowing am I? Perhaps… 😉
