True to their name, there are danishes (and Danes) all over Denmark and the capital Copenhagen. There are plenty of bakeries around, in addition to the lunch restaurants that only serve food until about 3pm, then close for the day. I took this picture as I made my way to Christiania, which I’ll be writing more about next week. While some of the locals warned me the area around the autonomous neighborhood wasn’t safe, things seemed perfectly normal inside this bakery just a few blocks away.
To get an idea, you can look through some of my other pictures from Copenhagen.
Denmark – such a beautiful place(the ladies especially)!
Great photo. When I went years ago on a long trip through Europe, I was on my way to Scandinavia and had just made it over via Germany on the train that hops on to the ferry. Coming from Germany, I thought, “Wow, this place is incredibly expensive” and finally understood why Danish ferry travelers swarm the duty free area.
Then, we moved on to Sweden. Then Norway. That’s when I realized what expensive really is.
Great photo! I am now hungry for breakfast.
haha, when I got over to Europe from the US I thought, man it’s expensive here in Germany. Then, like you I went to Dublin, Copenhagen, etc. and found out the true meaning of expensive!!
Anil,
Not sure if you’re trying to torture me or something. LOL! The danishes and pastries look so delish!! It’s soooooo not good to tempt a pregnant woman like me! I think I may be having contractions at the moment…or maybe they’re just hunger pangs!!

haha, hopefully this didn’t induce labor! Denmark is a good place to go on the popular Scandinavian diet of high carb, high calorie 🙂 wish I could beam you some of these pastries over ala Star Trek!
Haha I take it you “somehow” had the munchies for some danish pastries after that visit in Christiania 😛
haha, no this was before Christiania! I’ve got to imagine though that business is booming in all of the bakeries around the area 🙂
I have dreams of that place… I think they manufacture angels there…
LOL! That should be the Danish tourism board’s slogan:
“Denmark, where angels (and pastries) are made.”
that would NOT be a stretch at all!!
I’m laughing so hard- I loved your play on words in your title- and when I clicked on the actual post, it made me laugh so hard. I have wonderful friends living in Denmark and they have told me it is a very ‘pricey’ place.
It is expensive but they are consistently ranked some of the happiest people in the world. I’m guessing it’s the danishes 😛
This picture makes my mouth water! You all are talking about everything being so expensive over there (and I believe it), but how much were the pastries??
Most of the pastries at the top are 25 Danish krones, approximately $4.60. A cup of coffee as I recall was about 15 krone, or $2.75.
Geez, the fruit ones on the top shelf look extremely tasty – especially as I look on before eating breakfast…
They’re the “faux healthy” ones 🙂
Can I leave a one word comment?
Yum!!!
Perfect!
got hungry looking at those delicious pastries…
I’m not a huge fan of sweets but the Danes sure know how to tempt even the most disciplined 🙂
I normally think of eating Danishes in the morning with coffee for breakfast. Do they eat them all day?
This was around lunchtime and it was pretty crowded. I was surprised actually – I thought only the tourists ate danishes but seemed to be very popular with the locals. Danes, like the other Scandinavian cultures, eat large lunches and leave dinner to a smaller snack.
i think for all backpackers’ sake, myself first, better to avoid to publish in future this kind of distressing pictures. I am now hungry!
haha, if they could only be delivered express – it would be a booming business!
Those look so amazing! Somehow when traveling it seems like calories don’t really matter like they do at home. Isn’t that true?
I think a day of walking can burn off many more calories that we think. I just read this interesting article on the New York Times about sitting all day and what it does to the body:

Those Danishes really travels everywhere in the world. Yummy. It were some time ago since we were in Denmark – and of course it was in the summer. Looking at the gray (but still interesting) winter scenes you provided us with here, is not quite the same thing. Hopefully most people visits in the summer, right? *giggles*
The one advantage of the cold is that there aren’t many crowds I suppose. Being in Europe for this winter has really thickened my skin to the cold weather. I’ve been in Denmark before during the summer and it’s beautiful, not too hot, just right 🙂
I love the pastries and dishes in Copenhagen – super tasty, with lots of interesting influences. Great shot! 🙂
I love the full flavor, lots of calories but keeps you full for a while…just in time for a hot dog in Denmark 🙂
I LOVE Danish pastries! Not especially healthy, but sooo delicious.
Must all go to keeping warm in the winter, not sure about summer though 😛
It’s all your fault. I was going to skip dinner tonight until I read this post. Made me so hungry I just stuffed myself 🙂
A calorie is a calorie but this is a great way to enjoy every one!
Can somebody tell me the name of the bakery store on the pic, pleeaasee ??? It’s right after the bridge, at the very beginning of Cristiania. Oh, so delicious sweets with a lot of cream :)))
I wish I had jotted the name down, sorry I can’t be of more help!
