Beginning more than a month ago, the initial 64 cities nominated by you for The Best City To Visit Travel Tournament 2017, are down to two countries who are no strangers to the contest. Although the Romanian streak was stopped last year by Lisbon, Portugal, they’ve been in the Championship an impressive 5 tournaments in a row. Granada has also done well in past tournaments, making the Final Four in 2015, and handily defeated Vancouver last week. All this week though it’s Campina vs. Granada and your votes will determine which is named The Best City To Visit in 2017.
Click your favorite cities before this Sunday, April 9th, 5pm US EST. You will need to enter your email address, then click to verify your vote from an email that comes from Poll Daddy. Your email address is not used for anything other than verifying your vote. Emails aren’t used in any other way. Your privacy and personal information are important to me, always. Votes may not be visible until after the polls close. Good luck to all the remaining cities!
I’ll be posting the winner next week, Tuesday, April 11th as well as notify all of you who have won prizes in the tournament. Plus, some travel news on the winning city as well as updates on charity efforts for the 2016 and 2017 winning cities.
When the bracket first started I thought it was a fun idea. Obviously with no clear rules to define “best” it’s highly subjective. But whatever, let’s see what floats to the top I thought. And now that it’s the finals and we have Campina as a contender the whole thing lost all credibility. I love Romania, having spent 5 weeks driving all around the country. But seriously?!? Campina??? Come on. Someone is messing with the polls. A place with only 5 restaurants and 3 things to do on TripAdvisor. A place that has 8 hotels on booking.com. A place that doesn’t even register on WikiVoyage or NomadList. I’m not saying TA, Booking & Wiki are the only way to judge a place, but it’s a fairly good baramoter. If there are only 8 hotels than it’s fair to assume people aren’t exactly clamoring to get in. Ergo, it can’t possibly be the “best” at anything.

There’s more to a city than sights:

Of course it’s subjective but if people are organizing and voting as they have for many cities in the contest, they must be passionate about a place, which I think is a good sign about most anywhere.
Yes, you can visit Granada if you like crowded streets, with many shops like the big cities all over the world. Campina it something else, with his temperate clime, it is the City with the highest number of sunny days per year in Romania and with an air with many curative effects (this fresh air can only be found in Swiss Alps Mountains or in Rocky Mountains). In Campina you wake up in the morning and watch the peaks from Carpathian Mountains, over the day on your relaxing walks you can serve meal on restaurants in town center or close to the lake, or close to the parks or on green area close to hills and forests. There are unique in the world museums or special places that it is better to discover your self and then tell about to your friends. I do not think that Trip Advisor or Booking is important when you make this kind of decision.
How can you compare Granada with Câmpina?! Did u had Even the minimum of curiosity to Check the surface size n number of persons that lives in?! Granada is 4 times biger then Câmpina And has 5 times many people then Campina. Is normal to have “just” 8 hotels And “just” 5 restaurants ( are more then 5). Is a beautiful, clean And quiet city.
I’m with J, this is ridiculous. Campina? Where even is that in Romania? And it somehow managed to beat out Istanbul and Tokyo? Come on. This is like when Sibiu won a few years back and, guess what, it was boring as hell when I visited, minus the rather nice old town. It’s not a good sign when a tourist board picks something up and starts skewing the results. Why did you even include Campina to begin with? It’s an extremely odd choice when looking at the other cities on the list.
Also, not a single African city to begin with? Way to ignore an entire continent.
Every year, readers choose the cities during February. Next year, feel free to nominate any city you like 🙂
If by any chance Campina wins this stupid contest, you should be punished to come here and die of boredom, along with all the tourists who belived this to be true. The ones who voted Campina in the contest, residents I presume, are already dying of boredom and maybe they needed some company. So, come along!
i’m from Campina, in Romania, i’ve lived there for like 30 years of my life before i decided to move to Bucharest, and i think the only description i can give for it is with the lyrics of Weird Al : “If you come to visit you’ll be bored to tears/We haven’t even paid the phone bill in 300 years.” It pains me to say so, but yeah, it’s the truth. Don’t get me wrong, it’s is a beautiful town (not even a city), with cool people and nice views, and also the most number of sunny days a year out of all the settlements in Romania, but still, it’s far behind Istanbul for example. So yeah, you make your choice.
I m from Bucharest,in Romania but i go very often in Campina is a beautiful town

You kinda forgot to list Amsterdam… the most exciting and most beautiful city in the world. That’s weird.
I don’t pick the cities, everyone else does each February when the contest begins.
Granada.
