Not long after once independent phone service provider Mint Mobile was acquired by T-Mobile did things start to get worse. For travelers especially, international call, text, and data rates increased while the plans offered less options. Since those changes from the end of 2023 it seems like some of the feedback has gotten to Mint Mobile who has decided to partially bring back and useful travel feature.
Not Uproam But Not Terrible
Before the acquisition Uproam was a Mint Mobile feature that gave customers the option to buy a set of international credits (e.g. $5, $10, $20, etc.) and use them for data, text, and calling at rates dependent on the country they were in. It was use as needed versus use it or lose it. Uproam would be great to have back but the new Mint Mobile 30 Day Mint Pass is at least a step in the right direction.
30 Day Mint Pass
The new 30 Day Mint Pass is $5 which gets you 100 text messages and 100 minutes of calling from most countries in the world, using your Mint Mobile number and line. It does not come with any data (for that you still need to get a 1, 3, or 10 day pass) but for the occasional phone call or SMS authentication text for online accounts, the 30 Day Pass meets those needs.
The 30 Mint Pass as the name implies expires 30 days after it’s activated. For those of you traveling abroad outside of the United States and using Mint Mobile, I would recommend getting a local eSIM and using the 30 Day Mint Pass for the occasional SMS and phone call to your U.S.-based number if you need it.
Having some amount of data included in the 30 Day Mint Pass would be even better as it can be useful for when you need to quickly check something or to act as an emergency backup to a local line. Hopefully Mint Mobile will hear that feedback as well but for now, the 30 Day Mint Pass is a welcome improvement – certainly over Visible’s terrible international problem.
