How Hard Is It To Learn A New Language?

The difficulty of learning a new language depends on the intensity of instruction, previous language experience, and above all motivation. The National Virtual Translation has outlined various levels of proficiency and the length of time required to achieve a ‘level 3’ of proficiency for English speakers.

For example, to become proficient in Swedish takes approximately 600 hours, whereas Arabic 2,200. People often wonder what is the ‘most difficult’ language, anthropologists agree that there isn’t one. It’s how different a language is from your mother-tongue that determines that.

Rate Books and Share With Friends: Shelfari

Those of you book lovers out there now have your very own social media site. Shelfari users can share their ratings on books they have read or are reading and see what their friends are up to.

Shelfari is free and allows users to build a “shelf” and embed it in websites, blogs, or Myspace/Facebook pages. Users can also join groups devoted to a favorite author, genre, or book such as Harry Potter, Borat’s Travel Guide, or If I Did It.

Hoops For The Homeless 2007 Recap

I’ve posted a few pictures from the charity basketball tournament that myself, Peaceluvbug, and D-Train competed in this past June. We fought hard, but lost all three of our games – but the experience was good and we’ll be ready next year.

Thank you all to who contributed and helped us raise $1,000 for homeless shelters around the Washington DC area.

Also, some of you have some more pictures – could you send those my way?

Thanks 🙂
