13 Dots Grounds Belgian Airline

A new Belgian carrier, Brussels Airlines, has been forced to change its logo following complaints from superstitious passengers. The 13 dots making up the stylised ‘b’ brought a flood of complaints about the “unlucky” design.

It would be really ironic if the first flight with 14 dots crashes doesn’t go smoothly.

Brody To Play Spock, Star Trek Movie Christmas 2008

I know that Matt Damon playing Kirk generated a lot of hate last time and I’m beginning to join that boat (I thought he’d make a good young James T. at first). More information is coming out about the movie (which is first denied by publicists then we are told is true) and here is the latest.

IGN Movies cites studio sources who have told the web site that the roles of James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy may go to three very big name stars: Damon, Adrien Brody and Gary Sinise.

The film is going to be a prequel centering around the time Kirk and his buddies first meet and directed by JJ Abrams, the guy who did Mission Impossible 3 and Lost.

The cast, the premise, the movie, what do you guys think?

Swiss Man Gets Fake Gucci Ad Printed in Newspaper

This is sooo Swiss.

But few have the audacity of a man in Switzerland, who conned one of the country’s biggest media companies into publishing a two-page ad he created of himself posing semi-naked beside a bottle of Gucci perfume.

The man, who claimed to represent the Italian fashion giant, called up the Swiss weekly SonntagsZeitung last week to book the expensive color spread in Sunday’s edition, a spokesman for the paper said.

Christoph Zimmer told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the man asked for the 60,000-Swiss-franc (about $50,000) bill to be sent to Gucci.

Strange laws,? cow love, stone throwing holidays, and lame excuses for speeding, the Swiss are rapidly on the rise for being the strangest people on the planet.

International Arrivals To US Down 10%

Lack of tourism and cumbersome visa processes that discourage travel to the United States not only hurt the economy, but damages the best cure for anti-Americanism.

Total international arrivals into the United States declined 10 percent between 2000 and 2004. One survey shows that business travel into the United States has declined by 10 percent in the last two years, at a time when places like London, Singapore and Dubai are showing strong increases. Once No. 1, the United States has dropped to third as a travel destination, behind France and Spain. Over the last 14 years, global tourism has been thriving, having increased by 52 percent. But America’s share has been declining, down 36 percent in that same time frame. The Discover America group points out that travel and tourism is the third largest industry in the United States, employing 17 million people and generating $105 billion in tax revenues.

Mark Twain said it best,

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.

Are You Special?

Odds are probably not, but you think so.

Today?s college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society.

In fact even Oprah pointed this out a few weeks ago when she was explaining why she opened her school in South Africa rather than the US.

“I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn’t there,” she said. “If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.”

…somehow I don’t think that is completely true.

Are we now the “me” generation?

I don’t think it is the cool gadgets that are to blame but rather the privatization of human relationships. Much in the way that has happened in the business world and with Congress (damn lobbyists) more groups with fewer people (or individuals) can now wield more power than ever before in history.

In the sense that a blogger can become a celebrity (Perez Hilton for example) and people with money can convince our political leaders the importance or fringe issues we are now products ourselves. Resumes, Myspace pages, and email address are now our “brand” that we market at every opportunity.
