Save Those YouTube Videos

With videos like Salad Fingers, Chacarron, and the progression of Michael Jackson becoming white, how could you not want to save them to your computer?

There are few ways to do this. Here is my preferred method:

  • 1. Go to either KeepVid.com or YouTubeX.com and copy/paste the url of the video you’d like to grab.

  • 2. This will download the flash (.flv) file to your computer.
  • 3. Now you need something to watch this video with. Download the FLV-Player (for Windows).
  • 4. If you’re running Mac, you’ll want to convert the .flv file to something you can watch (or MPEG4 for your video iPod). PodTube will do the trick. The link wasn’t working when I tried it, hopefully it will be up soon.
    • Windows users can convert the .flv files using the (free – this whole process is FREE) Riva FLV Encoder.

Now, there you go! YouTubes for your computer and iPod!

Don’t Pay For Your Heavy Suitcase

If I’ve noticed one thing about flying over the past year, it’s that the baggage weight limit keeps dropping. In fact the limit for most international flights is 20kg (which is about 45lbs). That may seem like enough, but it always seems that you end up a few kilos over – no matter what the limit.

The fines are nothing negligible either, averaging 75 dollars.

Why are these limits imposed?

The limits are a way for the airlines to make money, especially in these lean times. They are not for your safety or because heavy luggage can weight the aircraft down. The trick to avoiding this fine is simple – bring a second small suitcase for yourself in case you go over the limit. You are given 20 kilos per suitcase, but not a 40 kilo total (if you only have one suitcase).

What that mean is if you have one 25 kilo suitcase, you can just put the extra 5 kilos in the second suitcase. This way you are not fined and it doesn’t break any rules. Bring along one of those smaller suitcases with the wheels on them. If you don’t need it, give it back to your friend/family member who gave you a ride and pick it up when you get back from Tahiti

Oh, and in case you’re wondering about those women people who already travel with two suitcases, the fine for bringing an extra piece of luggage is usually $50. You’ll have an extra piece of luggage, but $25 extra bucks to go shopping with 😉

This Poor Guy

Santa Claus in French, From Turkey?

In French, Santa Claus, “Le Pere Noel“. Pronounced (le pear – noel). That’s a pretty easy one and a nice way to sneak in an extra (non-dirty French word of the week 😉

Now here’s for the Turkish part.

Santa Claus is a variation of a Dutch folk tale based on the historical figure Saint Nicholas, a bishop from Myra in Asia Minor (the greater part of modern-day Turkey), who used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. His charity became legend when a man lost his fortune and found himself incapable of supporting his three daughters, who would not be able to find husbands as they lacked dowries. This man was going to give them over to a life of prostitution; however, St Nicholas provided them with gold, enabling them to retain their virginal virtues and marry.

This is probably one of the most remote connections to modern day Turkey that could possibly be made. Ask any Turkish person though and Santa was smoking shisha, playing? backgammon, and eating kebabs
