Europe on $5 a Day is 50 Years Old

The inspiration behind many travel writers, Europe on $5 a day is 50 years old. Created by Arthur Frommer in the 1950s the series of books spawned, South American on $5 a day and many others. The prices may be different today, but the concept is an important one in travel still today.

Then as now, Frommer insists, “budget travel is a preferable method of travel because it leads to a more authentic experience. You meet people imbued with intellectual curiosity — teachers, students, artists, normal people, people from all over the world — who want to have a genuine experience, rather than an experience whose aim is to make you physically comfortable and let you enjoy the pretentiousness of flaunting your wallet.”

Combine Encryption and Messaging with Trillian

Trillian is a free standalone product that allows users to combine various messaging services such as AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. Unlike Meebo, Trillian is downloaded and installed on to your computer, so it might not be best for the office – though great for travel.

Trillian offers a host of features including encryption (Meebo does too) that can make your IMs more secure, even from your IT department. Although we prefer Meebo since it doesn’t require a download, you might have to especially if you are traveling to a not-so-safe destination or will be behind the Great Firewall of China.

If you are already using Trillian version 3.1 or older, make sure you update to the latest version. A critical vulnerability was discovered in the software that could allow an attacker to takeover (Windows) machines. Check to see you are using version 3.1.5.0 at least.

Botnicalls Leaves You A Voicemail When Your Plants Need Watering

Next time you leave your house to under your neighbor’s care, you won’t have to worry about brown plants when you return from vacation. Botanicalls is a project that uses senses in the soil of your houseplants to give you (or your house-sitter) a ring when it’s time for some H2O.

The Botanicalls project is fundamentally about communication between plants and people. We are empowering both by inventing new avenues of interaction. Plants that might otherwise be neglected are given the ability to call people and request assistance. People who are unsure of their ability to effectively care for growing things are given visual and aural clues.

Here’s a clue: if the dirt is dry, add water – if it’s moist, don’t. Maybe a diagram would be more helpful.

Germans EcoTourism Keeps Them At Home

It’s an interesting concept – using lower emission forms of travel and not leaving Germany – all in an effort to reduce holiday travel CO2 emissions.

Giggling by the sea – and lying topless in the sun – are Martina and her three environmentally friendly colleagues.

Like many Germans, they’re keen to cut down their carbon emissions, to do their bit in the fight against global warming. So instead of taking the plane to Majorca, they’ve taken the train to Mecklenburg.

It seems as though many Americans already do this, though not to cut down on carbon emissions. Calculate the pollution each trip creates, green your car, and offset your carbon emissions. Yahoo also has great advice for your day-to-day lives.
