Get European Train Tickets Online With EuRail

Before you head over to Western Europe it’s a good idea to map out train routes between destinations. Get your tickets online in advance, check schedules, and get youth passes with EuRail.

If you plan to travel from city to city extensively check out the Eurail Global Pass which lets you travel in 18 European countries for any 10-15 days within a 2-3 month period (depending on the plan you get). Prices will run you about $700 for unlimited travel. Consider also, less hassle in airport security and cheaper that taking multiple short flights. (It’s also better for the environment).

Many Eurail offers also include hostel, dining, and museum discounts with the price of a ticket or pass. Train does take longer than flying so make sure your video iPod is prepared, you’ve got the essentials, and have read up on international faux pas.

Brussels, Belgium

Peaceluvbug wrote about her recent trip to Brussels.

Honestly, it was the cheapest trip RyanAir was offering and I speak the language, so we thought we??d go for it. Hotels in Brussels are VERY cheap, so we ended up staying at a 4-star hotel It was about the same price as staying at a nice hostel, so of course we picked the place where we could shower and leave our stuff in the room! The hotel was walking distance from the city center (Le Grand Place), right next to the European Commission and the European Parliament, and very near a huge park. I got to use my French, which was nice.

Here are some interesting tidbits about the city of Brussels:

  • About 1/3 of the 1 million inhabitants of Brussels are foreigners.
  • It is the headquarters of the European Union.
  • Brussels is a bilingual city, meaning all street signs are both in Dutch AND French.

You can read the rest and take a look at the pictures from her trip. There’s also London, Barcelona, and 8 places you should visit but might be scared to.

What Does Your IT Department Know About You?

Many people often book flights, search for vacations, and check their email from work. Depending on who you work for and your company policies, there is a good chance that much of the information you’d like to keep private is not. Every employee should be aware that they may already have a very intimate relationship with their IT staff and not even know it. Some information should stay private and there are a few tips and tools that make this possible – even from the office.

  • Searching for flights – When ever you initiate a search, whether it be via Google, FareCast, or any other online trip service you are giving away information about where you want to go, when, and for how much. In order to keep your searches private make sure to use one of the free many proxy sites out there. Those of the most paranoid can keep most everything they surf from work secret with Tor.

Experience Midnight Sun In Iceland

During the months of May and June Iceland goes through a period known as “Midnight Sun” where the sun does not set for 2 months. Although the further south on the island you go the less you’ll be able to notice the effects.

Icelandair is offering flights from Boston for around $400 and various other places that go through extended periods of long daylight (Sweden $471, Denmark $521, Norway $522). Prices go up considerably after June 15 so now is the time to go.

If you do happen to take Icelandair but not to Iceland, take advantage of their great Iceland stopovers. Spend a day or two in Reykjavik before your next destination.

Remember the best time to buy airplane tickets is Wednesday night and check your international faux pas before you take off!
