2007 Europe’s Warmest Winter in 700 Years

This past year was the first time since the year 1289 that average temperatures were record breaking in consecutive years.

According to an article recently published in Geophysical Research Letters, the last fall/winter season was Europe’s warmest in 700 years. In fact, the last time Europeans witnessed such unusually high temperatures was in 1289. (Although that was due to a major volcanic eruption in the area).

Recall how this past season Switzerland’s skiing industry was disrupted. Ski resorts across Europe have already begun creating contingency plans for an increased lack of snow.

Flying With a Knife

On a recent trip from BWI airport to Long Island, I brought along my usual backpack for short trips. I left for the airport in Baltimore at the latest time possible without actually missing the flight.

Now my bag usually gets a through looking over from the X-Ray examiner, since I fly with lots of electronics (laptop, iPod, etc). Aside from the occasional, “Would you mind turning your laptop on”, I don’t have any problems – and didn’t at BWI.

I wasn’t until I was on my way back to BWI that security in NY found something.

The World Monument Fund was developed to call attention to cultural sites and landmarks who’s existence is threatened by human activities.

This year’s list of the 100 most endangered sites includes 59 countries. The United States is home to more listed sites than any other country at seven, including types of development such as “Main Street Modern” public buildings that symbolized progress after World War II. There are six sites listed in Peru and five each in India and Turkey.

The entire list is updated every two years.
