I Talk Tech, Travel, And Best City Tournaments On The Extra Pack Of Peanuts Podcast

A few months ago Travis Sherry asked me to be a guest on his relatively new podcast called Extra Pack Of Peanuts. It didn’t take me more than a moment of listening to a previous episode to agree since Travis, who you might remember from my live chat on earning free flights with frequent flyer miles, has such an organic podcast style. We geek out on our favorite travel gadgets as well as go in-depth about my annual The Best City to Visit Travel Tournament (which Travis is a huge fan of) in the 42 minute podcast, recorded back in August, below.

You can also download this episode titled “How to Use Technology While Traveling With Anil Polat” directly for listening offline. Lastly, if you like what you hear, I recommend subscribing to the Extra Pack Of Peanuts podcast on iTunes for more travel related interviews and shows.

This Photo From Above Shows The Landmarks To Look Out For When Flying Into Istanbul

istanbul landmarks map

Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport (IST) is the world’s 6th busiest and the city is planning to add a third – the world’s largest – by 2017, making chances pretty good if you fly often enough, you’ll eventually be above these Turkish skies. Whether you’re arriving for the first time or simply want to savor one more Istanbul-moment after a trip, you can use my photo above to quickly spot out some of the city’s most famous sites. I took this picture months ago without the intention of using it as a makeshift map, so please excuse the graininess. (I also inverted the photo so it’s oriented with north on top and west to the left. Here’s the original picture plus wider-angle by my friends Turkey’s For Life.)

To get these views under normal conditions, sit on the left side of your plane when arriving from Europe, the United States, or points west; the opposite for departures and points east. As impressive as these landmarks are from above, you’ll have to venture in the Basilica Cistern, say happy birthday to the 1,476 year-old Hagia Sophia, then eat your way through Istiklal Avenue to appreciate them from inside out.

Avoid Your Camera’s Black And White Setting To Take Amazing Monochrome Photos

This is a guest post by Darin Rogers, a semi-nomadic writer, photographer, and part-time civil engineer currently based in the Philippines. Darin is also author of Capturing The Journey, which teaches you to take better travel photos with technique as much as technology. He wrote a wonderful guest post for me back in 2011 titled, 5 Ways To Take Better Sunset Photos When Traveling, and I’m very excited to have him back today. All of the photos in this post were taken by Darin.

Back in the day, when I was first learning about photography and how to use a camera, a good percentage of the photos I took were in black and white. At the time, there was a practical reason for this. Film cost money and black and white film was a lot cheaper than color. It was also easier to process yourself in a darkroom. I remember hours spent in a darkroom messing around with smelly chemicals, film canisters, and photo papers under the glow of red light.

Those days are pretty much gone now. With the proliferation of inexpensive digital cameras that produce high-quality images with bright vibrant colors that cost nothing, most people don’t think much about black and white these days. If it is considered, it’s possibly thought of as old-fashioned or relegated to the purvey of fine art photographers. However, this needn’t be the case. There are a number of reasons why you might want to consider black and white for some images.

Why Use Black And White At All?

At one time, everything was done in black and white, or monochrome, because that was the only option.  Nowadays, we do have a choice and color is of course most often used, although often just by default. So what are some of the reasons we might want to use black and white? When might it be an appropriate alternative to consider? A lot of the reasons for using black and white are subjective – we just like the look – but I’ll highlight a few things to think about in the following examples.

Redirect What You Want To Highlight

First of all, consider what you want the photo to be about, what elements or features of an image you hope to emphasize. This could include characteristics such as contrast, lines, texture, or patterns. By removing the distraction of color you boil the image down to its basic elements, allowing these particular characteristics to stand out. In the color version of the image below, the group of leaves were a dark red hue with hints of green. I liked the original version but by removing the color the image became one of patterns and textures. Not necessarily better, just different.

Illuminate Lifeless Lighting

There are times when a scene may have flat, uninteresting lighting, such as with fog or overcast skies, or the subject may just be naturally colorless. This was the case in the image below where the slightly hazy sky combined with the harsh tropical Singapore sunlight rendered this original image rather flat and lifeless. Rather than ‘fixing’ the image by attempting to bring out more of what little color there was, I chose to remove the color altogether.

When Color Diverts Focus

What if a scene has too much color? Too much color, you say? It’s true! There are times where too much color can actually become a distraction. The following image is a good example. The lights on the tower had such a strong orange cast that the structure almost appeared to be glowing, overwhelming the scene. Removing the color removed this distraction.

Capture A City Moment

It’s certainly not a requirement but street photography seems to have maintained a strong tradition of using black and white. This is likely due to do the ‘old school’ appearance that black and white often conveys.

Add Ambiance To Faces And Places

Although as I suggested earlier it can be rather subjective, black and white may simply provide a certain aesthetic you’re looking for in an image. For example, black and white is often used to great effect in portraiture and landscapes.

Why You Shouldn’t Use Your Camera’s Black And White Mode

So, technically, what’s the best way to create a black and white image? As most image editing programs have multiple methods of converting to black and white, and books have been written on this subject, I’ll just give you a few quick tips.

Many digital cameras have a black and white function that allows you to take the image directly in black and white. While this may seem convenient, I would suggest avoiding the temptation as it leaves you few options for creatively manipulating the image later. You are much better off using an image editing program and converting it from color as you have much greater control over the final image.

As I said, most image editing programs have more than one way of converting a color image to black and white, each with subtle differences in output. Adobe’s Photoshop has at least three methods that I know of, and Lightroom has several methods as well. This can be confusing even for many professionals. You don’t need to get this technical, however. Most software that’s specific to photography will likely have a number of black and white presets that can simplify the process for you. Try some of these out and see what you like. If you do find yourself getting more interested in black and white conversion, a great tool is Nik Silver Efex Pro 2, a program specifically for black and white image conversion.

Similarly, most image editing apps on your phone or tablet will have at least one, and often several, black and white effect or setting. Maybe you’ve already used some of these in the past but if not, consider trying them out some time.

How The U.S. Government Shutdown Affects Traveling Americans And Visiting Non-Citizens

jefferson memorial shutdown

The United States Federal Government has been closed since October 1st, indefinitely, until America’s Congress can pass a budget to allocate funds for over 1,300 agencies. Since government shutdowns like the one in Washington DC are exceedingly rare in the developed world, the procedures and cutbacks pertaining to services, travel or otherwise, can be unclear.

Many are ad-hoc to an extent; based in part on how long the showshutdown will last. For those of you planning a trip to, from, or within of the United States, here’s what you need to know.

sleeping black dogA Brief Breakdown – What Is A Shutdown?

Since 1884 The Antideficiency Act prevents the federal government of the United States from spending money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress.

  • Why The Shutdown Happened32 members of Congress did not approve of the Affordable Care Act, insisting changes be made to the health care legislation before they would vote to pass a budget. With insufficient votes, Congress could not approve a budget. No money, no funny, no government.
  • Well, Mostly – Approximately 800,000 federal government workers have been furloughed (temporary unpaid leave) until a budget is passed. Only those employees deemed “essential” are still on the job. For example, only 3% of NASA employees are at work right now.

The biggest question at the moment is: when will this shutdown end? There are no definite answers but many believe it will be before October 17th, when the U.S. must raise its debt ceiling; otherwise defaulting on its loan payments. But until the federal government starts working again, this is the current status of services and sites pertaining to travelers.

Travel Visas To The U.S. – No Change (Theoretically)

The State Department remains operational so services such as visa applications that are funded through fees should continue to be processed at relatively normal time frames. However, during the last shutdown in 1996, nearly 30,000 applications went unprocessed per day.

Travel Visas From The U.S. – No Change

Since visas applications for other countries are handled by the consular services of those governments, your tourist visas won’t be delayed or disrupted due to the U.S. shutdown.

Passport Services For U.S. Citizens – It Depends

Although the State Department is processing new passports, renewals, and page additions as normal, several of their passport offices are located within government buildings currently closed due to the shutdown. If your passport is in one of them, it won’t be processed until the shutdown ends.

U.S. National Parks – All Closed

Including the Grand Canyon, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Joshua Tree, Yosemite, and Virgin Islands National Park in the Caribbean. Here’s a Wikipedia page with the full list of now-closed national parks. I’d link to the government pages but they’re all down as well.

Smithsonian Museums And National Zoo – Closed

In Washington DC, 17 Smithsonian Museums, plus the National Zoo, are closed during the shutdown as well as the American Indian Museum Heye Center and National Design Museums in New York City. A shame, because the National Air and Space Museum remains my favorite in the world.

U.S. National Forests – Partially Closed

It’s not practically possible to close all National Forests, which total 769,000 square kilometers (297,000 square miles) so rather, all campgrounds and offices must remain empty. National park rangers and security will still be working though, in case you’re worried about serial killers on your next hike.

Monuments, Capitol, White House Tours – Closed And Canceled Until Further Notice

Pretty much everything on this list of US National Monuments, including the Statue Of Liberty and Washington Monument are closed. Tours of the US Capitol Building, one of 5 popular tourist destinations that won’t disappoint you, are also on hiatus during the shutdown. State monuments and government buildings like the Texas Capitol Building in Austin are open however.

Will The Airlines Refund Me If My Travel Plans Are Ruined?

Having just called a number of major airlines, many will issue vouchers for future travel, if you can prove your trip was to a destination (e.g. National Park) directly affected by the shutdown. (U.S.-based carriers seemed more sympathetic to such concerns; if you’re a furloughed employee, be sure to mention that as well.) In case you can’t cancel your plans, you may want to load up on a few airplane meals since America’s Food and Drug Administration isn’t inspecting food imports during the shutdown. I don’t know how preventing e-coli isn’t essential but look on the bright side, it may just help you overcome traveler’s constipation.

Finally, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (the folks who can inspect your digital assets) and the Transportation Security Administration are both working at near normal capacity. Which means you can expect the delays, long lines, and pat-downs of suspicious children to continue as normal.
