Targu Jiu Wins The 2015 Best City To Visit Tournament, Romania’s Third In A Row

craiova park lake

The 2015 Best City To Visit Travel Tournament was the one where the Romanians, whose city’s Sibiu and Craiova won in 2013 and 2014 respectively, looked most vulnerable. There was a very close call with Granada in the Final Four – had the local media campaign begun an hour earlier it’s likely Targu Jiu would have lost. Instead, Targu Jiu passed Granada by 3 votes and eventually Boston, to be named 2015’s Best City To Visit by you.

Same Country, Different Results

Although it’s the third Romanian win, three things still hold true about The Best City tournaments: no Champion city has ever won back to back contests and no city has ever won the tournament twice. Finally, and most exciting for me, is that no city I have ever visited before has won. Since I always head to the winner of the best city contest before the year is up, I’m especially looking forward to planning my first trip to Targu Jiu some time in 2015.

The Best Portable Hard Drives For Travel

portable hard drive travel

They aren’t the sexiest topic but if you take a lot of vacation photos, travel for business, or have experienced a laptop crash on the road, a good portable hard drive is a serious matter. Not having any kind of backup is one of the biggest tech mistakes you can make as a traveler and while online backups have advantages, adding a portable hard drive as part of your travel security plan can ensure you don’t lose any precious data on flaky Internet connections.

These hard drives are the best choices that are both reliable and light, with a few distinguishing features between them.

Western Digital (WD) My Passport Ultra 2 Terabyte (TB) Portable Hard Drive

wd my passport hard drive

In most cases you don’t need to shop further than the WD My Passport series of portable hard drives. They’re 226 grams (8 ounces) light, 2 centimeters (.08 inches) thin, and very affordable at less than $100. The Slim version is 20% more expensive but half the weight if that’s a particularly important consideration for you. The My Passport also comes in 4 different color varieties, which might come in handy if you’re traveling with a partner.

Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2 TB Portable External Hard Drive

The main attractive feature of the Seagate Backup Plus Slim over the WD My Passport is that its 50% lighter but roughly the same price. That’s a pretty good selling point for a backup hard drive that’s nearly as durable plus syncs well with mobile devices; so you can backup your phone or tablet photos directly.

Samsung T1 Portable 500GB USB 3.0 External Solid State Drive (SSD)

samsung t1 portable hard drive

A solid state drive means that there are no moving parts inside the Samsung T1, giving it an exceptional level of reliability. An SSD also means the T1 Portable is about 3 times the price of the hard drives mentioned above – for 1/4th the storage space. Still, it’s physically smaller with data transfer speeds five times as fast. If you’ve got the budget and are a heavy photo or video shooter – the Samsung T1 is worth considering.

What Is A Terabyte And How Much Storage Do I Need?

A terabyte is equivalent to 1,00 gigabytes (GB). Given that the average laptop hard drive has a storage capacity of either 250 or 500 GBs, a 2 TB portable drive should meet your needs. Two terabytes also happens to be the largest amount of portable storage your can currently find before prices really jump. (A 4 TB portable hard drive costs 25% more per terabyte for example.) Of course that will change as storage inevitably becomes cheaper. However if you want to backup your backup using two drives, it’s generally a good idea to get two smaller drives, rather than a single big one.

Whichever portable hard drive you decide to go with, remember to protect it using Truecrypt, and automate your backups with Crashplan so you’re covered off and online.

In case you missed it, the Best City To Visit Final Four ended with two last-minute wins. Boston’s supporters came out to push their city past Reykjavik as the polls were closing Sunday. On the other side of the brackets, thanks to an active campaign by Turismo Ciudad de Granada, the Spanish city almost upset Romanian Targu Jiu in a back and forth voting race that went on until the final moments. In the end, we have Targu Jiu who defeated Granada by 3 votes facing Boston in the Championship. This is the final round of this year’s contest – will the Romanians win their third contest in a row or does Boston pull off the upset? Your votes will decide, good luck to both cities!

Where To Travel In Europe If You Want An Inexpensive, Unique Experience

riga latvia window

Europe is the world’s most visited continent making it accessible but pricey and crowded at the same time. Much of Europe’s tourism however is concentrated in 7 countries, leaving plenty of cities for the budget traveler looking to see the less-explored.

When I was posed this question by a some backpackers in Estonia, these places immediately came to mind for travelers looking at alternatives to precise German architecture and English prices.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Don’t let Bulgaria’s harsh sounding name keep you away from its eclectic national cuisine, served through a remarkably modern restaurant scene health nuts, vegetarians, and vegans will especially enjoy. Accommodation in Sofia is inexpensive (I recommend Art Hostel) and given that Bulgaria has a GDP slightly less than that of Sudan, nothing is terribly expensive for travelers with Euro or dollars. Most Bulgarians also speak excellent English; although your Bulgarian will definitely improve after a few glasses rakia.

vitosha mountain bulgaria

Granada, Spain

I’m not sure where you stand on pub policy but bars in Granada after 8pm have a standard practice of serving a complimentary tapa (appetizer) with every beer or vice versa. Whichever way you order, the cost is around 1 Euro in a city with a strong Arabic influence remaining from the ruins of the Alhambra. Most people zip through Granada as they travel across southern Spain but these are all of the things you’ll discover on a longer stay.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Although Iceland isn’t quite the bargain it was after a banking collapse in 2008, flights are cheap and Icelandair even offers free stopovers. Prices are even better in winter since most people don’t realize Iceland basically has the same average temperature all year round. That’s only one of 7 reasons to visit Iceland in the winter, a country whose landscape looks like it belongs on Mars.

Sibiu, Romania

There is a lot to like about Romania and one of the reasons it does so well in The Best City To Visit Contests is because its residents are passionate about promoting tourism. To see why many Romanians are optimistic about the future where most are generally melancholy about government, plan a trip to Romania’s success story Sibiu.

Riga, Lativa

Of the three Baltic states, Latvia is certainly the one with the roughest edges. Polished Lithuania and tech-addicted Estonia are nice but Latvia’s capital Riga is less like a museum painting and more like a DIY graphic novel. Depending on how tight you like to tie your budget, you can easily spend a weekend in Riga for less than $100.

Girne, Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)

Most maps don’t show that the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean is actually split in two. You can read this quick travel guide to North Cyprus but in short its not internationally recognized. Whether or not the world wants to see it, on the ground the Turkish north is much cheaper than the Greek south; with beaches just as beautiful. The easiest ways to visit the TRNC are by air to Lefkosa from Istanbul or by taking a ferry from Mersin, Turkey.

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Yes, Sarajevo is safe but sites like the abandoned 1984 Olympic bobsled track are reminders of how far the country has come since the Bosnian War ended in 1995. Sarajevo has a lot of the blending people can’t stop saying about Istanbul but in a much smaller package.

See With Your Own Eyes

There are many people who might say about each of these cities, “there’s nothing to see there.” Ask any of them if they’ve been and they’ll probably tell you no. Each are experiencing rapid divergent evolution from their former selves without yet developing a tough tourist skin that’s hard to get beneath. Saving in Europe’s big tourist draws though isn’t impossible; you can spend a weekend in Rome on a budget or visit the rest of the first world, even if you live on a third world income.

The Best City To Visit Travel Tournament 2015: Final Four

best city 2015 final four

The Best City To Visit Travel Tournament 2015 Final Four is set, with a strong group of remaining cities. As it has been in the past years, Romania is represented deep into the tournament however Granada’s supporters hope to upset Targu Jiu. The Romanians easily beat Vienna but Spain showed it’s ready for any challenge. On the opposite side of the brackets, Reykjavik and Boston quietly advanced in last week’s Elite 8 passing Cape Town and San Francisco for a chance at the Championship. Your votes determine the cities that will advance, so let us know your favorites. Good luck to all!

The Hostel In Tallinn, Estonia To Book Whether You’re Looking For A Dorm Or Private Room

feelgood hostel tallinn

Normally I write a review of every hostel or hotel I stay at along my travels but some, like FeelGood Hostel in Tallinn, Estonia, have such a chemistry of everything a traveler wants, highlighting them is irresistible. In general, adding an “s” in the middle of the word hotel gives it a slightly diminished reputation in many people’s minds, but if you don’t know here’s what a good hostel is really like.

Affordable but maintained like a place that should cost more in a great location, the staff embody what makes FeelGood Hostel a great place in Estonia’s capital city.

Reflective Design

FeelGood Hostel is roughly a year old and designed like a fresher version of an IKEA showroom. There are a lot of small artistic designs added to break up the sterility of its cleanliness, giving it a homely ambiance. A home where you can both relax but hang out with your favorite siblings who make you laugh.

And it is clean. Very clean. Both combined with the individually painted walls, the attentive staff all show the effort FeelGood Hostel is putting into being Tallinn’s best. The mattresses are soft, lockers provided, plus there’s a basic breakfast in a kitchen that welcomes your cooking.

Privacy For Longer Stays

The private rooms at FeelGood Hostel can be harder to come by since many of them are filled with young professionals from abroad. I met one American who was working as a computer security engineer (we had a lot of tech to talk about); not too surprising as Internet is everywhere in Estonia, one of the world’s most connected nations. He was just one example of those in Tallinn sent for short work or school projects. Many others use FeelGood Hostel as a temporary apartment for stays of a month to three, since it’s relatively inexpensive with most of the same features.

Heterogeneous Mixture For Extroverted Introverts

A lot of people who like a quiet place to sleep worry that staying in a hostel means trying to drown out the noise of drunken conversations in the early hours of the morning. While party hostels do exists, the smart ones separate hangout areas from sleeping ones, strictly maintaining their segregation. FeelGood Hostel’s atmosphere cleverly meets at the intersection of silent slumber above, with plenty of activity for you to drop into on the main floor when you’re feeling social.

The Hostel To Hop In Or Off From

Tallinn is a city perfect for a weekend trip or as part of a longer trip through the Baltic states. You can begin with a short trip to Vilnius, Lithuania, then take a 4 hour bus ride to visit Riga, Latvia on a budget, or do it the other way around from Tallinn. However you decide to make it to Tallinn’s coastal shores, remember to do some basic hostel planning so you’re not the most annoying person in the dorm.

If you do stay at FeelGood Hostel, I would appreciate you mentioning that you read about it here. I wasn’t paid at all for this review (in fact, they have no idea I’m writing it) but a small word about foXnoMad helps show your support. Now, I’m curious about you, what are some of your favorite hostels around the world?
