4 Things One Traveler Learned From 15 Months In West Africa

This is a guest post by Francis Tapon, author of Hike Your Own Hike and The Hidden Europe, which I thoroughly enjoyed when I reviewed it in 2011.

Before March 2013, I had never been to Africa. And yet, when I landed in Morocco, I was embarking on a 4-year trip across all 54 African countries. The first 15 months would be in West Africa. I knew little about the area. Here’s five things I learned.

1. West Africa Is Safe

During my time in West Africa, I picked up over 1,000 hitchhikers. West Africans were often walking on their lonely muddy roads with heavy things on their head. I almost always stopped to offer them a ride. They usually were happy to enter.

Most didn’t know how to open a car door. One guy even tried to enter through my window! They also didn’t know how to get out of the car, so I would have to get out and open the door for them. Clearly, they weren’t used to cars. On the other hand, I picked up plenty of hitchhikers near cities who knew cars well.

The point is that nobody robbed me, car jacked me, or gave me any trouble. A few even left me food as gifts or even insisted on paying me a little money for gas. West Africa is safe.

2. West Africans Are Trustworthy

West Africa is not only safe to walk around in the streets, but also to stay in people’s homes. For example, I stayed with Secks (the family pictured below). All my camera and computer gear was in my room and dozens of people were coming in and out of the house. Anyone could have taken something. (The guy on the far left is holding my camera because we were filming something, he wasn’t about to run away with it!)

I’ve constantly been vulnerable to West Africans, throwing myself at them – trusting them. They don’t let me down. Yes, I’ve been scammed a few times, but that’s standard people preying on tourists. I don’t feel any more scammed than I have been in Europe or the Americas. I’ve even loaned one Senegalese $10,000 and a Ghanian $6,000. Months after I loaned them and when I was no longer in West Africa, they paid me back.

West African food won’t win any culinary awards for presentation value, but it’s delicious to taste! The photo above features a Nigerian dish with plantains, beans, spicy sauce, eggs, and rice. Somehow it all works! And all that for less than $2.

The only place in West Africa where they went overboard with the spices is Liberia. Hotter than a Mexican tamale! Speaking of tamales, I didn’t find any in Tamale, Ghana.

4. Tourists Ignore West Africa

west african travel

I’m alone watching the eclipse of the sun in Bobo, Burkina Faso in October 2013. Tourists rarely visit West Africa. It’s funny when I was climbing the tallest mountain in Ghana, a guide told me that “many, many foreigners come here.”

I said, “Really? How many per month?”

“At least 20!”

Given that most come in tour groups, it means that you’ll have most of West Africa for yourself. The good news is that people are friendly and outgoing, unlike Parisians who are constantly overwhelmed with tourists and sick of them. So visit West Africa, it’s one of the continents unseen sides. If you want to see much more of Africa’s unseen sides, then please support my Kickstarter project which launched on Africa Day (May 25)! The project is about making the pilot TV episode that explores the sides of Africa that the media rarely shows. Check out the trailer for the show and spread the word!

Thank you Francis for sharing your west African experiences and encouraging more to visit this lesser traveled part of the world. You can follow Francis on FacebookTwitter, and G+.

A Picture Of Black And White Uncertainty In The Heart Of Ukraine’s Revolution

kiev maidan black and white

We’ll wait until the May 25th elections, then decide what to do next: is what I heard over and over from behind grizzled faces in Kiev’s Maidan. These aren’t the thousands of people leaving flowers or strolling through Kiev’s downtown city center, but rather the hardline minority camped out in green tents that form the new spine of Independence Square.

For them, Ukraine’s presidential elections were a pivotal decision point a few weeks ago when we spoke under dim light filtering through heavy plastic. At the time a certain instability loomed but there remained a lining of optimism – a rarity for eastern European pragmatism.

Although Kiev remains safe it seems as one of the worst scenarios is shaping up elsewhere in the east. Newly elected mayor Vitali Klitschko plans to dismantle the barricades in Maidan Nezalezhnosti since the “main mission has been accomplished.” Many of the protestors living here, drinking cups of soup served freely to everyone in Maidan, have nowhere else to go. Even if they left, none of them would be returning to anything resembling the Ukraine they helped transform. Maidan’s permanent protestors don’t want to go back but aren’t sure where to go forward, which is why they’ll continue to stay in between.

How To Unlock Unlimited WiFi In Airports With Time Restrictions

estonia tallinn Lennart Meri airport

Although there are plenty of airports offering straightforward complimentary wireless, there’s a growing minority that tease your bits with an introductory period of minutes, only to cut the connection for an alternate paid option. (I’m looking at you Germany.) Many times this paid wifi requires you to have a local mobile number or is simply too expensive to justify watching another video of a pug dancing in a tutu.

Whatever the case may be, turning most time-based Internet restrictions in airports, hotels, or elsewhere into unlimited access generally requires nothing more than a few clicks with the right software.

How Time Restricted Wireless Connections Work

Condensing down the technical details into a small byte, when you log on to a given network, it makes note of your device’s MAC address, a set of letters and numbers that uniquely identify your network card. The MAC address from your phone, tablet, or laptop can then be used for authentication and how the airport network tracks your time online.

romanian clock

Think of the MAC address as your face and the restricted wireless connection like a limited all-you-can-eat buffet. You can consume all the calories you want for 30 minutes a day. But if you try to leave lunch and come back for dinner without paying, the hipster hostess recalling your face reminds you there’s no such thing as a free lunch (and dinner).

In the digital world however appearances are easily morphed, without going to the extremes of John Travola, Nicholas Cage, or Joan Rivers.

Will Spoof For Internetz

MAC addresses are hard-coded into network interfaces but the free programs Mac Makeup (Windows) and LinkLiar (Mac OS X) use software magic to make them variable. This is akin to putting on a convincing rubber face mask for the buffet example above.

While you can’t change your face, it’s possible to alter your appearance just well enough to fool the host or hostess.

Step-By-Step MAC Spoofing Using LinkLiar

To demonstrate how straightforward spoofing your MAC address is, here’s exactly how to do it using LinkLiar for OS X. (Windows users, the process is basically the same using Mac Makeup.)

1. Download LinkLiar – Click over to either CNET’s LinkLiar page or GitHub’s download page to grab the half megabyte application file.

2. Install LinkLiar – As you would any standard Mac app but keep in mind once done, it will be hanging out in your System Preferences, not Applications folder.

linkliar mac os x

3. Open System Preferences – Click the purple LinkLiar icon. You’ll be prompted that System Preferences must be closed, then reopened. Click OK. Once System Preferences comes back up, click the LinkLiar icon again.

4. Spoof Your Wireless Connection – When LinkLiar fires up, it shows your network interfaces with their current MAC addresses shaded in gray. Click your wifi adapter (this would work for Ethernet connections as well), then toggle the fake MAC address by clicking the little wheel. Hit Apply at which point you’ll be prompted to type in your administrator password.

linkliar osx

5. Stay In System Preferences For A Moment – Otherwise you may have to restart this process. In the main System Preferences pane, click Network, which will open up the Networking Preferences window. In this new window, in the left sidebar click in this order: Wi-Fi > Assist Me > Diagnostics > Continue > Continue > Allow > Quit

6. Clear Your Browser Cache – Here’s how in Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari. (Alternatively open up a new private browsing window.)

This entire process will take you less than a minute after you get the hang of it and once completed, will give your laptop a new lease on wifi life. You can repeat the steps above as needed pretty much without limit – just be sure to make your next connection – but if you don’t here’s how to miss flights for free.

Expand The Airwaves

In case you’re wondering if there are any negative side effects to MAC address spoofing, in travel situations there aren’t any notable ones. You should however remember to make note of your true MAC address on OS X and Windows if your home or office network implements any kind of MAC filtering. For places that don’t offer even limited free wireless you can try these airport wireless passwords from around the world, get passwords at airports that don’t offer free wifi, or uncover hidden networks using NetStumbler.

Why Reward Credit Cards Might Be Costing You More Than Bonus Miles Are Worth

This is a guest post by Ken Myers, a father, husband, and entrepreneur. He has combined his passion for helping families find in-home care with his experience to build businesses. You can learn more about him by visiting @KenneyMyers on Twitter.

Rewards cards with bonus signup miles can earn you a free flight but are designed to prevent you from completely taking off. Knowing the pitfalls between your spending and a complimentary upgrade to business class will let you maximize miles while keeping your credit intact.

Be Interested In Rates

When you borrow money on even the best airline credit cards, interest rates often average 4.4% more than cards not offering points. This means you are spending more money with each swipe in order to points if you’re making full monthly payments. Over the span of a year, it is quite possible to spend more in interest alone than it would have been to simply save for a given trip.

data slap 1Being Beat By The Bonus

When you are approved for a rewards credit card, most will require you to spend a certain minimum amount – ranging from $250 to $3,000 – within 3-6 months to qualify earning a signup bonus. What many people don’t put into consideration is use of a card under these restrictions can devalue those rewards, in terms of the interest costs. As I mentioned above, it is incredibly easy to surpass the value of a plane ticket if you have to pay high interest on your purchases. That “free” flight you are planning on might cost you much more than it would by paying upfront, as you can see in this chart on Airfairewatchdog.

Mind Your Cents Per Mile

Many airlines, including the three alliance programs you should sign up for, allow you to purchase additional miles to pay for flights, hotels and fine dining. When you compare the cost of miles on various airlines, any perceived savings might be negated.

streets of izamal mexico

For the sake of argument, assume that you’re going to travel from Denver, Colorado to Long Beach, California for a family visit. On Delta Airlines’ SkyMiles program, a round trip ticket would cost 50,000 miles plus $10 in fees and taxes. The Gold Delta SkyMiles rewards card you signed up with requires $1,000 be spent within the first 3 months in order to receive a 30,000 mileage bonus. Once acquired, the program rewards 30 miles for every dollar you spend. This means you need to spend an additional $667 in order to earn enough miles for this trip. You also need to consider the $95 maintenance fee for the card for every year after the first.

Now, assume your credit score puts you in the mid-range for this card – a 17.24% interest rate on purchases. After spending the $1,667 in order to achieve 50,000 miles, you could pay $475 in interest if your monthly minimum payments are $60 each – taking you three years to pay off. If you keep the card the entire three years, the total cash you would need to invest is $2,342:

  • $1000 initial spending in three months to get 30,000
  • $667 spending to earn 20,000 miles
  • $95 in maintenance fees per year for two of the three years it takes to pay off the card, or $190
  • $10 in fees and taxes
  • $475 total interest from your spending at 17.24-percent

The actual cash price of flying from Denver to Long Beach is only around $496. Using the rewards card for the specific purpose of earning miles, if you cannot pay off your total debt monthly, can increase your out of pocket expenses by roughly 450%. A total amount paid on interest being equivalent to four potential trips to California over that time.

Although it’s common advice to pay off any credit card debt completely at the end of each month, it’s easier said than done – as the average American household owes over $15,000 – an amount 51% cannot pay back. Cards offering travel rewards are especially tempting but there are plenty of ways to earn frequent flyer miles without getting more credit cards, helping you avoid the hidden underbelly of traveler debt.

Is It Safe To Travel To Kiev Right Now?

kiev road sign ukraine

Although friends and family may think you’re crazy to keep travel plans to Ukraine, you’ll find the blanket of depressing news from that country doesn’t quite cover its capital, Kiev. Any trip to Ukraine is as complex as the political situation on the ground but understanding the conflict’s landscape reveals a number of places left to safely explore.

Expect A Cool Welcome

When I first landed in Kiev two months ago, the passport control officer asked me behind a cold eastern European expression, “Kiev, are you sure?” Twice. Admittedly her reluctance to accept my sanity made me apprehensive, a feeling amplified by some trouble I had with the first thing an unprepared traveler should prepare for. Dodging sidewalk caverns while getting lost in a city that’s not the prettiest (it’s no Porto) made it initially hard to tell whether the wear was a reflection of revolution or symptomatic of a country Transparency International rates as more corrupt than Pakistan.

Though you’ll quickly realize as Maserati’s race past Lada’s along Saksaganskogo Street that life hasn’t visibly changed much despite the national turmoil.

Entering Maidan

A visit to Kiev shouldn’t be on any nervous traveler’s itinerary but those of you beyond jitters considering a trip must visit Maidan Nezalezhnosti (“Independence Square”). The one square kilometer city center is where Ukraine’s revolutionary demonstrations began and is one of the most powerful, overwhelming places I have ever seen. All most locals can talk about is the chaos that surrounds them so with war on their minds, many recommend you as a foreigner not to visit. I mentioned in my recent live chat from Kiev, Maidan has essentially turned into a somber park for the average traveler passing through with your biggest concern being the indigenous pickpocket.

kiev maidan revolution

The Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) considers the overall crime rate in Kiev to be similar to that of other large eastern European cities. Common threats are petty theft, ATM skimming, and that criminal meme where you pick up a “dropped” wallet, then are accused of stealing the money inside.

As you can see in my photos and video from Kiev’s Maidan, the intimidating entrances enclose most of the visual evidence that a revolution began here.

maidan ukrainian flagMissing The Usual Travel Trouble Benefits

When any place transitions from relative stability to disorder (or simply seems to in media reports) prices for travelers usually drop as suffering business look to maintain or recover tourism revenue. In countries like Egypt, a rare travel window of opportunity opened up 4 months after Hosni Mubarek was ousted, when the Pyramids of Giza were devoid of anyone else except lonely touts in 2011.

Unfortunately for your wallet, prices are relatively unaffected in Ukraine. It’s not a bargain but it was never too expensive to begin with. Budget accommodations at the bizarre Why Not? Hostel run about $5 for a dorm and $30 for a private room. You can get a better idea of overall costs for things like food at Expatistan and obviously, the sky is the limit.

What About The Rest Of The Country?

There is a major east-west split in terms of stability and security in Ukraine. Having spent several weeks in eastern cities like Donetsk near the Russian border right before separatists held votes for autonomy, I can tell you a trip there now wouldn’t be without a healthy dose of risk. For the rest of the country, I asked friend and expert Oksana Arkhypchuk from Active Ukraine about the situation elsewhere:

In the west it is completely safe to travel and get around everywhere. During ‘high-pressure’ holidays like May 9th – Victory Day, seen as a tragic moment in the history of Western Ukraine, we had extra block posts, police check along the road right outside of Lviv. But that’s only true for major stressful events like controversial holidays or the upcoming Presidential elections. Other than that, you can feel free to go anywhere, within Lviv and outside to the countryside. You won’t feel any politics at all.

There are a few critical criteria to evaluate before canceling any travel plans due to safety concerns but ultimately, it’s a personal decision you should be comfortable with either way, based on the latest reliable information.

Why You Should Sign Up For These Three American Mileage Programs Even If You Don’t Live In The US Or Ever Fly US Carriers

tallinn airport estonia
One of the biggest mistakes you can make with frequent flyer miles, aside from not redeeming them at all, is using miles on an airline-to-airline basis. Make the most out of the points you earn flying by accumulating your frequent flyer miles in one place and thinking in terms of airline alliances. The best way to do this is by signing up for three specific US-based airline mileage programs – United Mileage Plus, American AAdvantage, and Delta SkyMiles – which will allow you to collect points from over 60 airlines as though they were a single carrier.

The Importance Of Funneling Your Miles

There are three major airline alliances: Star Alliance, oneworld, and SkyTeam, founded by United, American Airlines, and Delta, respectively. What most people don’t know is these three airlines – United, American, and Delta – accept miles flown on any of their partner carriers. The reverse is not true however, meaning partner airlines won’t accept miles from each other (in most cases).

For example, say you fly twice this year on Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines (both Star Alliance), 3,500 miles each. Most people would claim the first 3,500 miles with Lufthansa’s Miles and More program, then 3,500 with Turkish Airlines’ Miles and Smiles. That leaves you with 3,500 miles in two accounts that cannot be combined. Instead, if you were signed up for United’s Mileage Plus, both of those Star Alliance member flights would go into the same account – now you’ve got 7,000 miles. The best part: all partner airlines must accept points from United’s Mileage Plus. The same goes for American Airlines with oneworld members and Delta for SkyTeam carriers.

You want to avoid spreading out your frequent flyer miles when possible, even if you regularly fly the same airline if it happens to be one of those listed below:

Star Alliance – Use United Mileage Plus When Flying Any Of These 25 Airlines

  • Adria Airways – Aegean Airlines – Air Canada – Air China – Air New Zealand – ANA – Asiana Airlines – Austrian – Avianca – Brussels Airlines – Copa Airlines – Croatia Airlines – EGYPTAIR – Ethiopian Airlines – EVA Air – LOT Polish Airlines – Lufthansa – Scandinavian Airlines – Shenzhen Airlines – Singapore Airlines – South African Airways – SWISS – TAP Portugal – THAI – Turkish Airlines

oneworld – Use American Airlines AAdvantage When Flying Any Of These 16 Airlines

  • airberlin – American Airlines – British Airways – Cathay Pacific – Finnair – Iberia – Japan Airlines – LAN – TAM – Malaysia Airlines – Qantas – Qatar Airways – Royal Jordanian – S7 Airlines – SriLankan Airlines – Mexicana

SkyTeam – Use Delta SkyMiles When Flying Any Of These 19 Airlines

  • Aeroflot – Aerolineas Argentinas – Aeromexico – Air Europa – Air France – Alitalia – China Airlines – China Eastern – China Southern – Czech Airlines – Garuda Indonesia – Kenya Airways – KLM – Korean Air – Middle East Airlines – Saudia – TAROM – Vietnam Airlines – Xiamen Airlines

You don’t ever have to fly United, American Airlines, or Delta to use their mileage programs as giant point collectors. All you have to do is follow to follow a simple process when checking in at your next flight.

dancing airportEvery Time You Fly Any Of The Airlines Listed Above Remember This When Checking In

Although the best flight search engines give you the option of adding a frequent flyer account number when booking, it’s much more reliable to work with the person at the check-in counter. When you hand over your flight details and identification, make sure to tell them you’re a member of (i.e. United Mileage Plus, American AAdvantage, Delta SkyMiles) and hand over the appropriate account number. Then, hold on to your boarding pass stubs for at least 4 weeks afterwards in case you notice the miles were never credited. This way you can call United, American, or Delta, with details (and proof) to make sure you get the points you’ve earned.

In Case You’ve Been Lazy You May Be Able To Redeem Past Flights

Once frequent flyer miles are credited to an account, they can’t be moved elsewhere under most circumstances. So if you’ve got your miles scattered across airlines, the best thing to do is begin concentrating them for the future, now that you know how. For the procrastinating travelers out there who might not have bothered collecting points for past flights, United lets you go back 18 months, American Airlines 12 months, and Delta 9 months. Browse through your inbox to find the specific flight details and with a single phone call you’ll be on your way to earning a free flight or upgrade in the most efficient way possible.

In case you’re still not completely convinced on using frequent flyer programs, here’s an 8 minute guide to getting set up for reluctant travelers and 7 ways to bump up your earning a notch with and without getting more credit cards.
