foXnoMad Turns 8 Today Because Of You, So Have A Few Shots On Me

fox gif

I had a lot in mind to write for this blog birthday post – from a renewed inspiration I’ve recently found to my upcoming plans and projects. Perhaps about the question I still can’t completely answer – how long will I keep traveling?

Or reflections on a journey that’s brought me to protests in Donestsk, Ukraine and gotten me detained in Ankara, Turkey. The places I visit so I can share a bit of what I experience with the over 2 million eyeballs that read my words on foXnoMad monthly. (Occasionally I’m assuming, while unlocking free wifi at airports with restrictions.)

But what I really want to say, is thank you. All of any of this (the big “this”) is made possible because of your support. I don’t forget it when I’m climbing volcanoes in Ecuador or end up in places that are OK to hate. Thank you again. Tonight I’ll drink raki like a Turk and cheers to you one by one. Well, actually, make that collectively, I’m still trying to recover from boozing in Moldova.

How To Get To The Top Of The Petronas Twin Towers In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

petronas twin towers kuala lumpur malaysia

Unless you’re particularly fond of long lines you’ll want to begin looking into reserving tickets online to the Observation Deck of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at least 48 hours in advance. You won’t be completely immune to queuing though as the online ticketing system only guarantees you hours long waits to see Malaysia’s capital city from above, which I opted not to, since I rarely go to the top of tall buildings when traveling for this very reason. The 80 Malaysian ringgit (~$25 USD) tickets also get you a walk on the Sky Bridge, a nightmare of an experience according to most travelers on TripAdvisor.

Though from the exterior, the Twin Towers are equally, if not more impressive as getting them into any camera angle helps you appreciate the world’s 7th tallest building(s). Once you’ve built up an appetite from photographing outside and wandering around the elegantly designed lower floors you’re better served filling up at the lunch buffet of SB Corner, about a 15 minute walk away.

The Best Travel Laptops Of 2014 (So Far)

best travel laptops 2014

Size, battery life, durability and weight aren’t factors that mean much to a laptop that sits on a desk all day but for those of you who carry an electronic baby on your back regularly, they’re crucial factors to consider before purchasing your next one. You might be mulling whether or not it’s a good time to upgrade your travel gadgets and in past years when listing the best travel laptops of 2012 I broke them down into categories based on qualities such as price.

Now there’s such a convergence of computing power inside slender frames that the following group of laptops should make perfect travel companions, even if they occasionally become homebodies.

Once More The Top Pick

Although it will upset a bunch of hipsters to say this, Apple products aren’t inherently better than Windows laptops. Deciding if you should buy a Mac or Windows laptop for your travels can be a big choice if it’s a first-time switch but if you’re not operating system biased there is a clear cut choice for all-around travel machine.

Keep in mind however that Apple recently reduced prices on the Macbook Air line by $100, making it an ideal time to buy before a rumored (significant) upgrade coming in the next few months.

Being thin has it’s travel perks but if you’re like me and prefer an Ethernet port, DVD drive, or simply more digital speed in exchange for a half kilo (~1.5 pounds) plus .75 centimeters (~.3 inches) than I recommend taking a look at the latest 13-inch Macbook Pro with Retina display. Everyone else tired of me sounding like an Apple commercial should read on.

  • Acer Aspire S7-392-6425 ($1,399) – Despite a clunky name the S7 is an efficient 13-inch laptop that’s actually thinner than the comparable 13-inch Macbook Air. At the same weight, what separates the two is a few hundred dollars in price for what is a durable, overall well-designed Windows 8.1 laptop.
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 2 (Starting at $450) Microsoft Surface Pro 3 (Starting at $779) – Prices are dropping quickly on this laptop-tablet lovechild since Microsoft will begin shipping the Surface Pro 3 on June 30, 2014. [EDIT: The Surface Pro 3 is out now and it’s good, very good. A laptop-tablet hybrid worth looking at seriously if you’re on the market for a Windows machine.] With a 10-inch touchscreen plus keyboard the Surface Pro 2 is more tablet than laptop, ideal if you’re going to be using it mainly for emails, Facebook, and tray-table typing. One drawback of the Surface Pro 2 however is that it averages an hour less of battery life than any of the fully grown laptops mentioned above.

surface pro 3Microsoft Surface Pro 3 (256 GB, Intel Core i7)

  • Lenovo Ideapad U430 ($599) – There isn’t a single feature of this Intel iCore i5-4200U 1.6 GHz thin but slightly heavy 1.5 kilo (~4 lbs) laptop that stands out but together they combine to make an excellent budget ultrabook most travelers will be happy with.
  • Samsung Book Ativ 9 ($1,259) – With close to 9 hours of battery life and impressive 3,200 x 1,800 resolution screen, if graphics are an important part of your mobile work or entertainment, the 13-inch Samsung Book Ativ 9 is a laptop you should strongly consider.

One More Laptop Than Tablet

Despite being officially designated a laptop-hybrid, the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga Pro 2 ($1,199) is decidedly a laptop that likes to swing tablet on the weekends. Comparable to the Samsung Book Ativ 9 but with about 2 hours shorter battery life, it’s a machine that wins you over once in your palms. The price tag might also help, considering it’s $150 less than the Samsung.

So, Which Is The Best?

Much like cars, peasant foods, or Star Trek costumes and cosplay, there is rarely a single answer to what is the best travel laptop. Choosing a laptop is a personal choice that varies, but as travelers, we’re all looking for many of the same features with a few tradeoffs to be had here and there. Whichever one you decide on, be sure to protect your laptop from the side effects of traveling, setup a backpack security system to keep your bag safe, then lock it down physically and digitally.

Does Traveling Age You Physically?

old clock riga

There is a lot of evidence to support the mental benefits of traveling and related activities, such as learning to speak tourist before your next vacation. Few activities stimulate our minds like a trip that stretches our senses. All of these firing neurons, according to neuropsychologists, leaves us with stronger short and long-term memories – something you may have noticed while experiencing the return trip effect.

Physically however, jet lag, irregular sleep, and varying leg room all have more subtle, cumulative effects on the rest of our bodies. Here’s what to look out for and all of the treatments you need to keep your traveling body as young as your sexy mind.

Earth’s atmosphere protects us from solar, stellar, and magnetic radiation from the cosmos and is less dense the further we get from the surface. The logic goes that the higher up we are, the more radiation we are exposed to, damaging our cells and ultimately aging our bodies. A study by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AGOC) on pregnant women found that while flying does expose us to more radiation than at sea level, an average high-dose flight only exposes a human body to 15% of the maximum dosage for a 24 hour period.

  • Calculate Your Recent Inflight Radiation Exposure – Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommend very frequent flyers and flight crew be aware of the amount of ionizing radiation they’re being exposed to. The FAA has a free tool you can use to estimate your exposure over a given time.

The same study by the AGOC also found that levels of radiation increase to potentially dangerous amounts during some solar-energetic particle events. Travelers, especially pregnant women should monitor the Space Weather Prediction Alerts website.

Stressing On Altitude

Flying at high altitudes means less oxygen inside pressurized cabins – a travel technology originally designed for war – which increases oxidative stress in the human body the Journal of Nature found. The effects were measured on athletes training at moderate altitudes of 915 meters (~3,000 feet) for 2 weeks. Although there was a measurable increase in free radicals, the test subjects who were given antioxidants were less effected.

Researchers of the study concluded that pilots, flight attendants, and frequent business travelers who spend extend periods in the air may be adversely affected by increased oxidation and should consider consuming produce high in the vitamins A, B, C, E and Z. To further combat the stress of jet lag on your body, be sure to shift your mealtimes 24 hours in advance of crossing timezones.

mexico booze storeCombating Clots With Wine Aerobics

Researchers at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands found that those who took flights of 4 hours or more were more than 3 times likely to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT). One effective (and fun) way to prevent DVT is by consuming small amounts of red wine while staying physically active at least for 5-10 minute per 2 hours of flight time.

Remember to also wear stylishly loose socks and pants so you’re not restricting blood flow further to your lower parts – a fashion choice that could also save your life in a plane crash.

Back To Sea Level Basics

It might by now seem like every flight is trying to kill you but all you need is a bit of exercise, sleep, and wine to prevent the aging effects of flying in the sky like a jelly bird. The biggest – most common – worry is one we deal with everyday: bacteria. Your chances of getting ill after a flight or two increase due to being confined in close quarters with other people, not because of circulated air. Avoid the dirtiest seats on the airplane, wash your hands frequently, and keep your internal alarm clock hydrated to prevent traveler’s constipation.

I published a slightly aged version of this post originally back in 2008.

What To Expect If You’re Detained By Turkish Police During A Demonstration

ankara protests gezi park anniversary

This past weekend I was detained and taken into custody by Turkish police near Ankara’s Kizilay Square, a few blocks away from my family’s apartment on the 1 year anniversary of the 2013 Gezi Park protests. The most dangerous weapon I was in possession of was a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS 10 camera and while Article 34 of the Turkish Constitution allows peaceful demonstrations to be held without prior permission, 118 people including myself were rounded up in Ankara.

My 8 hour detention gave me a firsthand look into a dangerous process that has become disturbingly routine in Turkey for citizens and foreigners alike. Such demonstrations tend to occur in busy areas travelers are likely to frequent, like Istanbul’s Taksim Square, and the risk of death is very real. Police have fatally shot demonstrators in the head, killed 15 year old Berkin Elvan by firing a tear gas canister at his head, and been so brazen that even Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has been videoed punching a protestor.

You are seriously risking abuse, injury, or death by a police force that often travels in gangs, both in uniform and plain-clothed, arresting and beating people at will if they are found anywhere near a demonstration. Take caution to avoid protests but in case you can’t or decide to be a one-person media outlet, this is what to expect and how to prepare.

Your Passport Won’t Matter

The first parts of such an ordeal will generally be the same whether you’re a Turkish citizen like me or a foreign national. Your nationality won’t provide you any protection as CNN’s Ivan Watson recently demonstrated by being detained while giving a live report from Istanbul.

Police often implement a similar tactic of crowd and pounce on civilians near a demonstration. They’ll typically set up lines of provocation in disproportionate numbers, attempting to block the movement of demonstrating groups. Multiple tear gas canisters will be at best, shot above demonstrators, at worst, directly at them, causing stampedes, as police rush forward before quickly retreating back to their original line.

As all of this goes on, smaller groups of about 20 police run around side streets with batons waving in a government sanctioned meet and greet. These scenes are repeated several more times while police stealthily position themselves around protestors. The rush and retreats seem designed to desensitize everyone so when they finally do come, you’re caught off guard. Many of those detained are random targets although a number seem to have been carefully picked out in advance.

The Arrest Is The Most Dangerous Point

turkey protests tear gas ankara

The moment in which police, usually in teams of 5-10, take you under arrest is the most dangerous for you physically. The amount of tear gas fired makes seeing beyond a few meters very difficult; within a few seconds to minutes the gas begins to suffocate your disoriented body. You’ll be yelled at and may be accused of having weapons or committing crimes in a threatening manner. Verbal taunting is nearly guaranteed but within the chaos there are other abuses. Ten minutes after I was tied in plastic handcuffs, a police officer sprayed me point blank with pepper spray. Given what others endured that evening, I was very fortunate to not have suffered any major physical injury.

Do not speak with police beyond giving them your identity and nationality if asked. Try to remain calm as many of the young, agitated police are a wrong gesture away from becoming violent.

Your First Stop Is Hospital

After you are apprehended, you’ll eventually be escorted to a police car that will take you to a local hospital. During the ride police will likely ask you more questions, make accusations, and incite fear by mentioning punishments. Fortunately, over 100 volunteer lawyers from groups like the Cagdas Hukukcular Dernegi (“Progressive Lawyers Association“) will be waiting for you at the hospital to tell you the truth while providing council. Photos of any injuries – another good reason to never travel without insurance – will be taken and documented by the group of lawyers.

ankara turkey protests

The volunteer lawyers work without pay to defend and inform you of your rights, answer any questions, and contact family members. In the case of foreign nationals, they will get in touch with the appropriate embassy. Many will know English but for those not confident speaking  the language, it’s in your best interest to let the lawyers know right away so they can make arrangements for a translator to be present.

Then, depending on the total number of people detained, you’re going to wait around to see a nurse that will take a health report. Let them know of any physical harm you’ve come under before they breathalyze you. (It’s not illegal to drink alcohol in Turkey or be drunk; this test is standard for anyone taken into custody.)

Now To The Police Station

ankara turkey gezi protests

Just as the situation begins calming down at the hospital, you’re moved to a police station where your identification is again processed. Keep in mind questions will continue to be asked about any and all things – from religion to politics to what you were doing at the time of your arrest. Under Turkish law, you aren’t obligated to say anything other than information pertaining to your identity. Take a page out of The Art Of War: be brief and don’t volunteer information.

All of the belongings on your person, like mobile phone, which you’ve had access to this entire time will be confiscated. The police will carefully document every item in your wallet, pockets, jewelry, plus your shoelaces before taking them. You get to keep any cash before signing a document verifying what you just handed over. Now, it’s starting to feel more like jail.

Men and women are all processed separately but in any event you’ll get to spend a few hours sitting in a holding room with members of the same sex.

Briefing Before Statement

ankara gezi protests

Eventually it will be time for everyone to be moved to another part of the building to give statements. Prior to the questions, a group of the lawyers who were previously at the hospital will give you a briefing, so you know what to expect. They’ll give you advice on statement semantics, not leaving your side until police document what you have to say.

<Insert a lot more waiting around here.>

Now, you’re going back to the hospital for one more check up (to make sure the police didn’t abuse you at the station basically). Some more documenting and under most circumstances if you weren’t causing damage or harming others, you’re released… unless you’re not a Turkish citizen.

  • Next, What Happens If You’re Not A Turkish Citizen – After all of the above, you’ll be sent to a special police processing center for foreigners. After some time there plus a few days, chances of your deportation are fairly good.

Hours After The Hours Of Release

Anything that’s been confiscated is returned, whether you’re a Turk or foreigner, as the first night of detention is nearly over. Assuming you haven’t actually committed a crime (e.g. vandalism), you’re either released or deported. (In the case of the latter, that process can take several days.) Although I can’t speak to the specifics after this point, for all detainees, the state prosecutors may try to open a case against you.

sık bakalım

The first night however has ended and as the sun begins to light the sky, dawn awakens you to the fact that none of this should have happened at all. Since it has, you realize everything could have been done in an hour if the powers that be had been bothered not to make every step along the way as inconvenient as possible.

Ask Expert Zulfiqar Rashid Exactly How Organized Child Beggary Works And What Travelers Can Do To Prevent It

zulfiqar rashidDuring our travels many of us have been confronted by young children begging for money, knowing on some basic level the cash they receive doesn’t stay in their pockets. Most travelers don’t contribute for this reason, despite wanting to help kids who are clearly living in extreme poverty. Unfortunately this system of child abuse goes deeper than many of us could imagine. My live chat guest today will answer your questions on the economy of forced begging, the process of child binding, and what you should do the next time a small palm asking for change is extended in your direction.

Zulfiqar Rashid was born in Lahore, Pakistan, and spent the first eighteen years of his life in Pakistan and France. He is the author of The Rat-Boys of Karalabad, a book based on the system of organized beggary, which is a deep-rooted part of society in Southeast Asia.

Leave your questions for Zulfiqar in the comments below. He’ll be by later today, Tuesday June 3rd from 10:30pm-1:30am US EST to answer them live.

Zulfiqar will be here for a few hours this evening to answer any questions you have about organized begging. Don’t be shy to ask things you think you should already know as we all benefit from learning where our assumptions meet reality.
